Using Howtocheat.....
I have Beta CS6 and CS5.1

I worked to page 36. Some exercises I could complete, some I could not do.

Page 36 says: file> preferences> Plug-ins
Not found in my copy of CS6 nor Beta CS6.

Oops! Thanks for pointing this out! Will correct it in the next edition.

Richard, if there's anywhere else you get stuck, do post a query here and we'll try to help you out.

Hi Steve, what would be good to have is a list of all the keyboard shortcuts?

I list the shortcuts on the book flaps - at least, the more interesting ones. I did think of including a chart of all of them, but frankly there are so many it would just be overwhelming and impossible to use.

That's why I decided to include just those I use frequently. Other shortcuts are mentioned at relevant points in the text.

Great book! Sorry to be sycophantic.

Selecting the fence- managed the verticals after some thinking about best start point; eventually manged to add verticals to the selection after lots of failed attempts, then couldn't do it a 2nd time.

Can you clarify the keystrokes involved please (Mac)?

Of course. It's all to do with when you hold the keys down.

If you hold the option key before starting to draw a selection, it will subtract from your previous selection. If you hold it after starting to draw, it will temporarily access the Polygonal Lasso.

In the case of the fence, you need to select the first one - start to trace, then hold option, then click the corners, then release the option key.

For the next fence post, hold shift before starting to draw, then, once you've started (so you're adding to your selection), release shift and hold option to use the Polygonal Lasso once more.

Does this make any more sense?

Ah-ha! Got it, thanks Steve

I had been trying to select the all the vertical elements in one go, moving from the foot of one post to the next. Now you have put me straight, I can pause after each post and sip my wine before adding another element.

Now that's what I call cheating
