black and white (not grayscale)
Hello everybody, I need to convert an image into only black and white. I do not want any shades of gray. Is there a simple way to accomplish this in photoshop. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, gloop5003 |

Hi gloop5003 Switch the default colours to black and white then try Filter/Sketch/Stamp, adjusting the Light/Dark Balance and Smoothness as required. rufus |

This method works, but I lose a lot of detail in my picture. Is there some way to do this using difussion or some similar method to keep the detail? Thanks, gloop5003 |

I still lose detail, but maybe the method I tried and some tweeking could produce the effect you're looking for. 1: Desatturate 2: Curves. I made the two points nearly point straight up on the curve diagram. Sliding them to the left and right will adjust the quality and detail of the image. I didn't spend too much time on it, so there is alot of detail I could have recovered. Hope this helps --Chris  |

You could also experiment with the Threshold, and posterize modes accessed by clicking on the fill icon (circle which is half white and half black) at the bottom of the Layers Palette.  |

I tried tank172's method but there are still grey pixels in the picture, micheal's works well but with less control than stamp. You can retain much more detail by increasing the relolution of the image. The bottom picture was increased from 300 to 900 pix/inch. You can increase this much more and return it back afterwards if you wish. rufus  |

The trouble is, Rufus, that while your method does indeed produce a lot more detail, when you reduce it down again those close-packed black and white pixels which make up that detail are converted into shades of grey! |

That depends on the type of interpolation that you use. Nearest Neighbor produces virtually no grey's, which are easliy removed with Levels. rufus |
