how can I match skintones in elements 3
(without curves)

The most likely candidates would be Hue/Saturation and/or Color Balance and Levels, that's more or less what you're doing with curves but in seperate dialogs, so it's a little more tricky to perfect.

Levels is similar to Curves, it adjusts the highlights, shadows and mid-tones.

plus quite a few other things ...

I just checked them out. They are pretty usefull and they have a quickmask thing as well

Can someone plz explain curves,
that is one of the few things that I can't really understand from reading the book.

besides for what curves does if you change to specific angles, what is the function of curves and how does it work. what kind of chart are you curving

The 'curve' represents the highlight/mid-tone/shadow scale. The top of the scale is the absolute white point, the bottom is the absolute black point and the middle, well, work it out

If you were to edit a grayscale image, each point along the line would represent a single shade of the 256 colours, black to white.

When you switch to the individual colour channels, you are adjusting their absolute points and anything in between.
