QuickMask 3: Transformations
Just got 'How to Cheat in Photoshop' and love it!
and I've decided to dilligently work through the whole book

so i'm up to page 13 and getting stuck already....

Anyway, before I even start i'll ask you all to forgive me for asking dumb questions.. I may end up posting a few of them!

(pg 13 diagram 2 & 3)
i've made my elliptical selection, I press Q to enter quick mask but instead of the circle going red the circle stays clear and the rest of the photo goes red.

now I know the most obvious thing to do would be inverse the selection.. but is there some way that I can change it without doing this? so whenever I enter quick mask the selection will go red instead of vice versa?

Hi flutterby - read Steve's introductory text to the first Quick Mask example (Page 8.)

Basically, you just need to double-click the Quick Mask icon on the toolbar to change the setting

You can also ALT/OPT click the Quick mask icon, you'll see it change between the two modes.

Re: QuickMask 3: Transformations
Thanks, both of you, for answering that question - and welcome to the forum, flutterby.

The purpose of QuickMask was originally, as the name implies, to mask those areas of an image you don't want affected by whatever treatment you're about to perform. But it works so well as a selection method that I recommend 'permanently' switching its default behaviour to this mode. Sorry for the confusion!

Also, I think it helps to change the color of quickmask to green, rather then red (again by double clicking on the qm icon)

I didn't know you could this. I learned a new trick! Thanks David!

I bet there's a gazillion tricks in photoshop, but I only know about three of them. I guess that's why those horrible tomes on photoshop are about 5 inches thick. In other words, they must list every trick in there books.

PS is indeed full of little surprises and shortcuts, not doubt there are some weird easter eggs to be found in CS and CS2 as well.
