Print from InDesign
Okay, I'm a Quark man and have been for years. But I tried InDesign on a friend's shiny new G5 and was amazed. The commands and menus are similar to Pagemaker and other Adobe products. The use of frames for text and images are similar to QuarkXPress.

I created a document with ease. But when I printed it, it was black and white. My friend and me went through the myriad of InDesign's print menus, selecting different options and commands, but we never got a good color proof.

Some of you on this forum use InDesign, have you had this problem? Would you guide me on getting a decent print?

Curious. Can I have more details? Bubblejet or laser printer? Bitmap or EPS images? If bitmap, what format were they saved in? Which version of InDesign?

Re: Print from InDesign
Hi Steve,

The printer is an Epson with standard four colors. I created a simple file using 4-color process inks. I created simple color builds and used them for type and backgrounds.

The print menu keep listing the inks as RGB, but there are listed as CMYK in the Color Pallet. Both of us couldn't figure out how make InDesign think of the document as CMYK. The color output was a mess; the colors where far off the mark. Instead of vibrant tropical colors, we got dull grayish colors.

Neal,

Hang on - I thought it was only printing in mono? Dull grayish color sounds like a bit of an improvement!

I'd suggest the Print Preset option under the File menu. Look under the Output section, and make sure CMYK composite is selected. And while you're there, check the Color Management section, change the source space from Document to Proof, and try the four options under the Intent pop-up.

I miss QuarkXPress already. We both tried changing the output to CMYK, but the option was greyed out and unavailable, only RGB and Grayscale where available.

The first proof was black and white, but after futzing around with the controls, we managed dull grey colors.

We tried changing things in the Color Management section and the source space, but InDesign refused to let us choose CMYK output.

We could make CMYK PDFs and print those, but that's not a good work around.

Um. Curious. Care to email me the document and I'll have a look here?

I will, but it may take a day or two. The file sits on my friends hard drive.

Thanks Steve.
