Changing the Ship's Wheel to gold
Is it possible to change a wood ship's wheel to gold? I'm posting an example from Shutterstock, but I need to make my own, since Shutterstock doesn't allow POD use. They probably did theirs in Illustrator or something, but I prefer Photoshop.

I can't figure out how to upload more than one image without making a new comment. Here's the wood one I want to change.

Re: Changing the Ship's Wheel to gold
Very belatedly: I tried to alter your wood image using levels, colour overlay etc. But I have never been very successful in getting objects to look metallic using levels. In the end I roughly made the three main shapes using the pen tool and then revolving them in 3D. I am a bit rusty at 3D so didn't duplicate them properly to get the light right, but I think that is the easiest way to do this. You probably found a better way ages ago.
1st image using levels etc. 2nd image 3D shapes (But not added shadows etc)

Re: Changing the Ship's Wheel to gold
Thank you for working on this. I was looking for a more metallic gold. I finally figured out how to do it, combining a couple different tutorials. First, I changed it to chrome, using an old Pixelperfect video tut that's no longer available (I found it on archive dot org, and saved it to my computer.) Then I changed it to gold, using the technique for changing silver to gold from the How To Cheat In Photoshop book.
Here's a quick summary of the Chrome technique:
1. I changed the object to B&W, with the default settings.
2. Ctrl-Clicked the layer thumbnail to load the selection, then saved that selection as an alpha channel.
3. Made a new layer above the object layer, for the Lighting Effects, filled it with 50% grey.
4. Filter> Lighting Effects, using the Alpha channel as a texture channel. (right now, it looks flat).
5. Clip to object layer.
6. Using a wavy curves adjustment layer with two humps, make the Lighting Effects layer look like chrome.
7. Use another Curves adjustment layer to change the Red and Green Channels to look like Gold.
8. Change the Grey layer to Overlay or Soft Light to bring out the details of the ship's wheel. (If overlay looks too harsh, I switch to Soft Light.) I also very slightly blurred the original layer, while keeping the transparency locked, so the edges are still clean. Just so the gold looked a little smoother, but actually I liked it both ways.

Well done Connie!

I wanted to reply to this ages ago but, to be honest, I couldn't get a good enough result to post.

I shall go through your process when I have a bit more time.

All the best.

Seems we are being spammed. Above link leads to a gambling site.
