Contest 98: Playing the numbers
A rather different sort of Challenge this week. Here's the story: I was asked to do a portrait of the author Douglas Coupland made of ones and zeroes. There are only three different tones that make up his face, and that part was easy. But here's the thing: I wanted all the numbers to be complete, so that none of them were half one shade and half another.

Here's a greatly reduced version of the final image:

and there's a higher resolution version of it here. You can also click here to see a detail, showing exactly what I mean about the complete numbers. (This detail has those Matrix-style vertical number strips removed for clarity.)

It took me a while to figure out how to do this one, but in the end I arrived at a technique that's not only effective, but easily reproducible with little effort.

So how was it done? And can you do the same? If there are no correct solutions by, say, next Wednesday, then I'll show you how I did it so you can all have a go.

Steve.. Are you looking for us to find the technique on one of our own pictures?
I don't understand numbers. I was never very good at sums.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
What I'm after is for you to figure out a way of achieving this effect, using whatever picture you choose.

A lot of the time, working in Photoshop is about problem solving. This was a particularly tricky one for me to work out, but a very satisfying technique.

As I said, if everyone really gets stuck I'll post my method mid week. There may well be solutions that are more elegant than mine!

Of course, it would help to be showing all the layers..... :/

I also changed the dark green to black, to make it show better.....

You have to type them out. Or just a few of then, then duplicate.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
i'm too stupid to figure it out without cutting my numbers, so here is my montage anyways.
for those not hip to my wit, number sequence is a code, pic is of da vinci (da vinci code), and number sequence is fibonacci's "golden string" sequence (google it)...

Hey, I think that Da Vinci looks good: as if it were part of a banknote

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
Well here is one more. I know it's more than the two allowed, but I missed last weeks so I think I have one image in hand Plus they are not using Steves bandwidth.

I just found another way to create the effect by putting numbers in a grid and using pixelate at the same size as the grid then using colour burn blending mode on the image layer to affect the digits layer. Because it was pixelated each digit is wholey one colour. Here is my final go this week followed by a close up to show the detail.
