Challenge 480: Build me a biker
I went to Madeira last weekend, where it was hot and sunny - a very refreshing break. You'll see a number of Challenges taken there in the coming weeks. I was most intrigued by this intricately decorated and artfully rusted motorbike I found parked right outside the cathedral: a huge amount of work has gone into constructing this machine, complete with rat trap on the back. But who would ride such a bike? What sort of clothing would they wear? And, more importantly, how hard would it be to fit someone onto this bike in a convincing manner? High res is here. ![]() |

Michael, to best of my knowledge I'm quite sure its a Harley Davidson. They have many model variations and this one is customized as many do. This one is a Hard-tail, i.e no suspension on the rear. The engine configuration is consistently a 45 degree inline V-twin which gives it the distinctive sound. I don't know how they did it, but 45 is copyrighted/patent so any other manufactures who designs HD'esk V-twins, e.g. Yamaha have to make the angle slightly different. |

Thanks, Trevor. I have zero knowledge of motorbikes, but from my research today I also am sure it is a Harley. I will check out Hard-tails now. |

They do soft-tails too, but to be "classic" hard-tail, not sure why but suspension difficult in those earlier days. I've not got much against it, but 45s vibrate a lot. Best go 90 v-twin e.g Ducati, MotoGutzi, Viincent BlackShadow and Suzuki, or for me better the Jota 3 cylinder 120 degrees and Triumph Trident (120 - 3 cylinder), smooth as a kite where most the primaries and 2nd harmonics are balanced..... and they sing in harmony..., don't growl ![]() Oops, I can't PS contribute FC image until next week.....sorry... |

Trevor, thanks for the info. The closest I can get to the Challenge image is a (highly modified) Fat Boy. |

I photographed 'my biker' in the Market on Saturday morning, only got 1 photo before he rode off on his bicycle. ![]() _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Few technical issues with video this week. Should be resolved soon. Iwa I really like the Elvis and Marilyn theme. Elvis particularly is well positioned ![]() ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |
