Great aquarium Loyd. Can see I am going to have to attempt animation again - but it takes me so long to get round to doing the Challenge, but to then try animating.. Maybe it should be a monthly challenge!!

Thanks Deborah. I'm not sure that I would fool with animations if I could create something like yours... most creative and stunning indeed. Very Nice! YIKES... LOOK OUT!

Some truly stunning entries this week!

Work has me putting in some extra hours over the next few weeks. Gordon, I haven't had the luxury of time to learn a new program. If Michael had not given us such a nice cutout, I might have not had an entry this week. As it is, I've had to make a very simple animation. Photoshop doesn't allow for true parallax. This was the best I could do.

Animation: http://vimeo.com/252642241

Hopefully, the extra hours won't last too long. I'm feeling tired already and it's only been a week.

Can't believe i'm doing a ship between ships. A quick 45 min manipulation of the "Meeting of the Queens."

Re: Challenge 689: Float Michael's boat
DavidMac was the first to set sail this week, with a remarkable change of plumage: the boat has turned battleship grey, surrounded by scaffolding. Beautifully done: I especially like the scaffolding around the mast. And a spectacular night time version - splendid lighting. Great positioning in the third entry - but that’s a very spiky prow in the reflection!

A neat illusion from lwc, with the boat tethered to a dock and two cameramen filming it. Good use of the prevailing shadow, and a great reflection on the cameraman.

Linda Eckert makes us all deeply envious with the magnificent view from her home, looking over Cap Ferrat - fantastic. I like the position of the ship, but the perspective of he ship is much too strong: from this distance, there would be almost no reduction in size from front to back:

A straightened-perspective view from GKB, with a nicely adapted Daily Express front page. A great Pathé News spoof in the animated version, but do watch the typography - swash capitals were never meant to be set in all caps. But I do like the spinning newspaper, the smoke from the funnels and the crash into the iceberg - and great use of the Titanic interior, too. Perhaps the seagull should flap its wings every now and then.

A highly realistic entry from Tom, with no magical symbolism, glowing skulls or light flares - which is highly against type for Tom. Instead, the ship is perfectly integrated into the scene, with smoke from the funnels. Small point: if you're going to flip it horizontally, remember to flip the ship's name back the other way...

A strong close-up from Emy, showing the ship passing a rocky island. A neat composition; perhaps the shadow is too regular for those choppy waves?

Great to see jospehine harvatt’s 25-year-old model (which isn’t as raunchy as that makes it sound), complete with QEII on the side table. A splendid piece of work - but you forgot the VR in bullet holes over the mantelpiece!

A great animation from michael sinclair, although I’d have placed the ship a little lower in the water - and perhaps the seaplane’s propellers should be spinning? Couldn’t identify the boat in the background... I’d have said Queen Mary but apparently not. I enjoyed the reversal in the second entry, but you still need to spin those propellers! Is that a different picture of the QEII, or did you painstakingly straighten out your original?

I like tooquilos's ship in a bottle, although I’m not sure about the viewing angle of the bottle relative to the ship... but that’s fine glowing water. A charming animated version - those slightly dipping wings on the seagull are splendid.

A first entry from Sue Martin, with a nicely composed montage of aquatic elements. I like the strong diagonal direction of them all, countering the verticals of the weed... very tasteful. Welcome to the Forum, Sue!

I like the way the tug in the foreground of Ben Boardman’s entry provides a sense of depth, but have to point out that the angle of the tug doesn’t match the top-down view of the ship. Neatly cut out water spray, though, and a good overall composition - but are you sure that’s an appropriate font for a Cunard poster?

A splendid animation from lwc, with the ship at the bottom of a fish tank. The fish are very good, but it’s the streams of bubbles and the lighting that really makes this come alive - as well as the waving pond plants. Excellent.

A terrific close-up from Deborah Morley, with a fishing vessel on a crash course. Excellent composition, a really dramatic view: I’d perhaps have given the fishing boat a slight rotation for added effect.

A rare entry from Nick Curtain, with a subsea image - great colouring. But I’d have put the back of the ship out of focus, since water is a very dense medium:

I enjoyed srawland's serene animation, with its peaceful soundtrack - very Zen. As with David Mac's third entry, though, you do need to ensure that the prow isn't so spiky in the reflection.

A great image from Mariner, showing Captain Sinclair about to go down with his ship - complete with Chinese tug at the ready should he change his mind. Not sure about the Plastic Wrap on the flag, though. Did you build that prow from scratch?

A fine painterly feel to dwindt's entry, very nicely composed against that background. Great lighting!

A close shave from James Arendell, with the ship running some distance aground. I like all the cracks, and that's a very dramatic angle.

An aquarium scene from Ant Snell, the ship nicely behind the glass. But the cat seems to be looking out of the picture... and did you use Refine Edge (or Select and Mask, as it's now called) to make that fur edge more realistic?

Many thanks, Michael, for the starting image.

Many thanks, Steve! The bay of Villefranche is the deepest one at the Côte d’Azur. Therefore the greatest crusaders drop anchor here.

Thanks Steve. It's not plastic wrap, although it looks that way. The flag is just too smooth and I couldn't think of a good way of adding wrinkles. Any ideas? Yes, I built the prow from scratch except for most of the hull and the striped bollard.

Mrs Hudson hung the mirror over it because she was a secret republican. Holmes countered by shooting a bigger VR on the left hand side wall - you can just about see the "V" if you look carefully

Re: Challenge 689: Float Michael's boat
Thanks for the comments Steve. I should never post to eagerly cause it makes one miss things. I see the howling tail wind blew my shadow a tab short of the stern. I think the light/shadow on the water plays tricks on the eyes and when one studies the aft of the vessel, the light/shadow creates the illusion that a wake is about to break against the hull hence the viewer may be under the impression that the shadow is correct. The sea isn't that rough though. In a nut shell..."I screwed up!" or i'm looking for excuses....

Some very interesting submissions everybody. Well done.

Thank you, Steve, but I fear it may be my last animated entry for a few weeks. I am working extra hours right now and don't have the time. I may be able to enter some stills, though.

And thank you Micheal. I really enjoyed this one.

Interesting because I had a similar reaction initially myself. This part of the reflection was obtained simply by direct inversion of the hull. The spike is in fact the pointed flag sticking up above the bow. So, although I thought it looked rather odd at the time, when I realised that it was in essence seemingly correct I decided to leave it.
