Challenge 715: Ceiling wax
I photographed this rather fine ceiling in Bury St Edmunds hospital a couple of years ago (I really must stop taking pictures in hospitals, it's going to get me arrested one of these days).

I thought it would make a good addition to a different room, but never found the room to put it on. Can you suggest a new location for it? Also, how would it be if those four panels on the left were all windows?

Nothing to do with wax. I just liked the pay on words.

High res is here.

Sorry Steve but my Pooh like brain is struggling. What panels on the left? They appear to already be windows.

Re: Challenge 715: Ceiling wax
This is what you call a REALLY, REALLY BAD IDEA!

First of all to take Steve's image and turn it upside down to create an utterly improbable swimming pool bottom is a completely barmy and stupid way to start anyway!

Extending the columns upwards and creating a new background to go behind them and a ceiling above them was straightforward enough but a lot of work matching perspectives.

The nightmare started with the water. Creating the transparent water from a texture and then creating all the reflections was the stuff of nightmare. I got round this to some degree by adding the cleaners fairly far away so the reflections are not too dramatically seen from 'below' and a straight flip can be fudged with enough ripple and transparency to sort of get them OK. The reflected lamps in the sides had to be re-buit by which time I was running out of steam and enthusiasm having spent far too long on things already ....... so they are also badly fudged.

In the end I was so far down the wrong road that I should have been philosophical and simply dumped the idea for something more intelligent. But I am a bit of an obstinate old sod on occasions so I just carried on with clenched jaw - not so much swimming as churning up more and more mud.

I have a feeling there's a salutary moral here involving boot size .............

Certainly a lot of work involved... interesting, and overall, I find the image quite pleasing.

I was impressed by both of them. But, in the second one don't you think those two small, open windows on the upper right of the image would be letting in a lot of water? Steve would notice.

Nah! The glass aquarium bottom continues on at the same angle behind the wall out of sight. So the windows are below it and not connected to the aquarium itself.

Lucky I just managed to think of that ...........

Phew, I think I need a couple of Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters after this one.

Sorry about the lo-res Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect and Marvin. The only way I could get a decent-ish image was to photograph them on my tv screen.

Great FX Gordon...

just remember Beeblebrox advised that you should "never drink more than two Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters unless you are a thirty ton mega elephant with bronchial pneumonia".

That would explain why my head feels like it has been kicked by an Arcturan mega donkey

Terrific Gordon. Funny idea too. Douglas Adams' 'Hitchhiker' series are some how symbolic of our generation. I have all his books.

Re: Challenge 715: Ceiling wax
Thank you David.

Douglas Adams' 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' was a wonderful depiction of logic, absurdity and silliness. The radio series, the books and the BBC tv series were all excellent. I went to the cinema as soon as the film was released with high expectations; eighty minutes later I came away feeling that a great opportunity had been lost.

If anyone has not read the series then I can heartily recommend it.
