Re: Challenge 719: No sun in Fortia
First to bring the sun out was DavidMac, with a clever sunset - some good highlights at the edges of those trees, but long shadows needed. The second entry is brighter, and quite convincing: I’d have thought much stronger shadows needed for that bright a day. I like their varying direction, though. A really enjoyed the jack-in-a-box weathermen in the third entry - what a great idea.

A late evening entry from lwc, and I do like the subtly wafting trees and grass. I agree with DavidMac about the bump - but you’re right, the back-and-forth effect as seen in the second entry doesn’t quite work either. A tricky problem. I like the horses and carriage in the third entry, but - really? Such strong and well-defined shadows on an overcast day? Plenty of horses in fourth entry, but why is the one in the foreground so low? Is she standing in a hole?

An entertaining snow scene from GKB, with added snowman. Very cute. The shadows should all point towards the sun - including that of the palm tree on the right.

Beautifully brightened trees from Mariner, with a terrific architectural frame around the view. I looked at this for a long time trying to work out what was wrong with the artist, and I think it’s just that she’s too far back in the frame: the back of her chair is sloping down, which points to a horizon around her waist level. But this is nitpicking - it’s a fine piece of work. A very rare second entry, ingeniously bringing the horses and trap to life, with a convincing rainbow too.

A parched scene from Josephine Harvatt - and I really like the way you’ve dried out the grass and trees. But doesn’t such dry landscape deserve a blue sky? Easily done, with a simple gradient set to Darken mode:

I rather liked michael sinclair’s “not an entry” - a very nicely brightened landscape. There’s a whole lot going on in the animated entry - excellent turning wind turbine, and rippling sunflowers; I like how the bee’s wings move. The goose is fine, too, but I’m not sure about the yachts, which seem a step too far for me. There must be a way of avoiding the bump in the clouds, though!

A very dark entry from srawland - so much so that it looked completely black until I tilted my laptop screen down (and I’m still not sure why this makes a difference). A fantastic sunrise in the animated version - and Sara, this is a really terrific piece of work. Beautifully achieved. I wish it could linger on the last frame for longer so we could admire the view.

Ant Snell gives us a clever reference to the ao.com ad, which I hadn’t seen before. And a very fine sunset to go with it, too. I enjoyed this one.

I see tooquilos has given that tin horse wings - and added a lush new mountain. I like the way the sun’s rays push through the tree in front of it: very well observed. A fine sunset in the animated version, although I must point out that the tree shadows need to lengthen as the sun goes down. A very cute flying horse, though, and the magnifying glass/book conceit is interesting. I like that fairground horse, with the doomy rippling sky: but the sky and the trees here need to be lit from the same direction! Very enjoyable.

A cleverly replaced background from Jota120, even coping with those fuzzy bushes on the right. I like the way the new bull cutout draws the eye - very well positioned. An interesting second entry - are you bragging here, Trevor?

A fine new sky from Ben Mills, and he woman in the foreground balances the view nicely. Could those trees be brighter, do you think?

Nothing gets past you does it? I saw the problem but thought nobody would notice.

Thanks Steve,

I am always fascinated by how differently we each see and perceive things.

It's quite common here for a 'wall front' to move clouds out in a very distinct and dramatic way having bright sunlight and dark cloudy skies within the same view.

That is what I saw in the carriage entry... thus creating the distinct shadows.

I think many people would feel that there's something not quite right, but it takes a bit of forensic examination to work out what it is.

Thanks a lot Steve,
In rural Spain they have those cut-out toros scattered around e.g. large on the top of hills. We've come across some live ones in remote fields. You can guess their likely fate .
We were having a laugh with El Sexmo sign! Spanish seem to drop "x"s into place names with strange results for some of us . "Sexmo is "an administrative division that generally comprised a part of the rural term dependent on a city. It is equivalent to the ochavos according to the community of town and land where it was applied". In our case "El Sexmo" is a small paradise that is becoming a dormitory city for many workers in Malaga and the nearby Technological Park."
Sorry to disappoint We did cycle up that hill to village on the top with all our baggage and later over the Pyrenees to France though, >1000metre, not laughing then.

Sadly I must confess 'Yes' to both. I was in Paris all of last week so my entries were very rushed all in one day before I left. Just go back this evening.

Poor excuse .............
