Challenge 725: Halfway up the stairs
Here's a curiosity spotted by Josephine Harvatt on her travels: a hotel stair with a fireplace situated half way up.

How could one make use of this oddly sited amenity?

High res is here.

OMG! Looks like the old railway hotels of my youth. The ones that had shared bathrooms and toilets at the end of the corridor.

Mercifully ours was en suite - I dread to think where they would have put a communal bathroom!

We also spent a night at a hotel where the bedroom floor was so far out of true that my phone slid merrily off the bedside table and the stairs had a distinct camber - didnt have a drink that night I can tell you, it was like living on a ski slope.

Seems you stay at all the high end places ..........

Here's somewhere a bit less smart for you.

Is that a real fireplace that burns wood, or has it been converted? Either way, it looks like if you don't hug the railing, you run the risk of burns going around that corner when it's in use.

I would guess the fireplace is real enough but it's insallation is not. It's purely decorative with no chimney.

When The Cat's Away or Sex 'n Drugs 'n Rock 'n Roll......... (Parental Guidance Advised)
This definitely looked like the kind of hotel that would have mice ......... so, with no particular target or idea in mind, I want searching for mouse pictures.

What I, quite unexpectedly, found were the most astonishing images of bizarre anthropomorphic mouse taxidermy, including even the couple on the mantel shelf - they really exist on a taxidermy site! Google Images can be quite entertainingly surprising sometimes .........

BTW I had the most terrible problems JPegging this. Even at maximum uncompressed quality it went unusably contrasty and dark. I had to adjust the original with some global brightness lift and contrast reduction to get the JPG to resemble the pre-adjusted original. It's not a problem I usually have so it must be something intrinsic to this image. This is pretty close now.

With apologies to Ian Drury for the title ..........

I know it's a little early for this but as someone mentioned the 'C' word a couple of days ago I took it to be ok to mention it myself

Thanks Michael, if nothing else it's a perfect gimmick for hiding any undone photoshop work.

Clever work David, and great idea Gordon.

Hmmm, All this place needs is some TLC: some adjustment here...some adjustment...there, and...perhaps a little...reconstruction, and before you can say "what a dump!" you have a new scene
