Challenge 988: The dogwash
I discovered this curious facility in Milton Park, just outside Cambridge, last weekend. Sadly there were no dog washers in evidence on the day I visited. I'd love to see it in action.

High res is here.

Re: Challenge 988: The dogwash
Well that's a new one for me! A coin operated (well card operated I presume) DIY dog wash! Presumably the buttons are different wash options - latte, doppio, cappucino, americano, etc.

I notice the video screen seems to be sponsored by what transpires to be the UK's biggest pet insurers. Pet insurers? I had no idea such things existed!

Is the policy in the pet's name or the owner's?

Are some breeds or species more expensive than others?

It seems probable that a Great Dane is going to cost more than a Hamster. How on earth do they calculate premiums?

Are there conditions according to age or known medical pre-conditions?

Do they cover unusual pets like, snakes, alligators, ostrich ...........?

When is a pet not a pet? A horse? Working sheepdog? Hunting Falcon? Homing pigeons?

Does it cover dognapping or theft? Canicide even?

Quite aside from my silliness, their site has some delightful quite genuine questions like "Does my dog's policy cover dental care?"......... What !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

From public pet laundering to pet insurance, this week's picture has exposed a vista of fields of ignorance I never knew I suffered!

Interesting observations David, we have had these 'dog washes' locally for years. I must say though, I have never seen anyone using one of them. Pet insurance has been promoted here for a very long time, and with dental care...lol.

A quick one...

Oh Steve! Don’t you read the signs before taking your challenge pictures?

Do you think they’d cover dental for our pet hippo?

Sorry Steve, drifting off topic.

Natural dog wash: and it's free!

NOTE: that I have two speed background layers: the one in the foreground is going faster than the trees in the distance; moreover, I have darkened and slightly desaturated the distant background to reflect the realism that heavy rain would bring.

Like the towel wrapped dog Frank. Nice touch.

The two speed background is excellent Michael!

This is definitely a "run out of good ideas" idea.

Re: Challenge 988: The dogwash
Michael. This is pure speculation and without actually trying it, which I am not about to do close to midnight, I have no idea if I am talking sense or not.

I am 100% with you on desaturating the background of your dog animation but I am wondering, because the further away you get the more and more light coloured rain is obscuring things, if the background might in fact appear to get lighter rather than darker.

The same principle as mist or fog thickening with distance? Does that make sense?

David, I've got a two year old Shitzu. Keep in mind he was only one kilo when I brought him home, literally fitted in the palm of my hand. Anyway I took him to the vet for a checkup and at the first thing she said was 'He will need braces on his teeth to correct the underbite. You may want to consider our dental plan.'

I thanked her, picked up and the dog and walked out shaking my head, wondering how on earth could they fit braces on teeth barely a millimetre wide. Needless to say I found another vet who assured me the underbite was a shitzu trait.

Very nice Anna
I have taken your advice and lightened the distant background and one or two things as well, and you or indeed everyone can make their mind up as to which version they prefer.

Re: Challenge 988: The dogwash
Well .... interesting. I do think the lightened version has more depth. The lightening enhances the desaturation, and saturation (or lack of) is one of the subjective ways we perceive depth.

Re: Challenge 988: The dogwash
What I see as the success of your experiment prompted me to try a very crude quickie pushing the idea to extremes. I really don’t like modifying other peoples submissions, especially quite so crudely, so my apologies.

Although it could be far better done, I do think as a basic technique, it increases both ‘raininess’ and depth.

Re: Challenge 988: The dogwash
I love your pampered pooch Anna.

By the way I sent this challenge to my son, who is a dog owner, and he replied: "If they made a smaller version for home I would want one!!! Autumn and winter in particular with a dog is messy!!"

Re: Challenge 988: The dogwash
David you are always welcome to modify my work; moreover, your effort is far from crude (self-deprecation?). Anyway, I'm suitably impressed to do an A-B comparison from my last entry, and one based on your effort (which I quite like).

PS I suspect the old man will be the final arbiter on which is preferred.
