Challenge 989: The supermarket refit
We've visited the Museum of Docklands before in the Friday Challenge, and are overdue a return.

Shown here is the rear wall of one of the original Sainsbury supermarkets, a chain which later became one of the UK's major brands.

Back then, it was all mirrors and mahogany, with the manager's booth right in the middle. I'd love to see how this could fit into a contemporary supermarket setting. And of course I appreciate the problem the mirrors will cause, which will require all your ingenuity to work around.

High res is here.

Re: Challenge 989: The supermarket refit
I wonder if anyone will have the courage (or foolhardiness?) to cope with the bevels?

That was exactly my thinking too. Seems the obvious route to go.

As you know, I always look for the quickest and easiest way to do things... and it usually turns out to be the most obvious.

Maybe not contemporary, but close.

If you call a show that ended twenty years ago "close", I guess so.

I do enjoy your entries Ant. Your sideways view on life always gives me a smile.

The trouble with getting older David, is that anything post circa 1974 feels contemporary.
“Side way view on life”, I like it, maybe I should have that as my avatars strapline.

Tell me about it!! ....... and it doesn't get any better with the passing years. The older I get, the more the past seems to get closer not further.

Other people's views of ourselves can be surprising. I am constantly baffled that most of my closest friends consider me an eccentric. I feel so completely 'ordinaire' to myself!

No, I had already cut it out by the time you posted. It's obviously going to be part of the new reflection, whetever that will be.

Re: Challenge 989: The supermarket refit
I am not really turned on by supermarkets. So I decided to give this splendid wooden facade an entirely new lease of life in a more classical milieu.

Sometimes when a challenge doesn't really grab me at face value, I will raise my own personal bar. This is a technical exercise in reflections and their different qualities and, particularly, their geometry. There is no attempt to be particularly creative here. My aim is quite simply to try and produce a result sufficiently convincing that, if you didn't know, you wouldn't guess. Obviously I am not going to sneak that past you lot, and certainly not Steve, but I think it's not a bad attempt. (There is incidentally one quite deliberate 'fault' made in the name of composition.)

The bevels were the killer because I quite literally haven't a clue what would really happen in them .... it's pure invention. In the context of the image I think they work fine, but they don't withstand close inspection or analysis. Despite that the image is well worth clicking and viewing at full size.

This is, without doubt, one of the hardest challenges I have ever done in the years I have been contributing. Despite its simple appearance there is a huge amount of work hidden in here and I have learned a lot!!

Re: Challenge 989: The supermarket refit
David, I echo your dislike of supermarkets. I am very impressed by your art work and love the way the colours match beautifully throughout the whole picture. The dancers and flooring look perfect. I could go on. However, the reflections of the legs of the two dancers on the RHS simply do not look believable. We all know how difficutl it is to create a reflection from scatch. You have another four days to the deadline. Why not work on Supermarket Refit Mark 2 and make it your best work ever?
[EDIT] Only the far RH dancer needs changing.

Re: Challenge 989: The supermarket refit
Ben. The lack of complimentary foreground makes this a view through glass windows ... which is clearly your intention. It's an odd supermarket with no aisles and everything on the floor! I took this to be a mistake at first but then realised it's much cleverer than I realised! ....... completely in line with the "No personal shopping" sign. Computerised overhead fetching mechanism?

On a teeny negative note, the perspective match is spot on in the lower half but goes a bit adrift as you approach and pass eye-line height. It's not instantly apparent - you have to look for it. (Sorry Steve, not trying on your shoes, but this is a challenge that, in some cases, is going to invite close inspection of each others' interpretations.)

What I find really impressive is your handling of the bevels. In the context of the whole they are completely convincing and, even on close inspection, they stand up well. To me they are the hidden challenge within the challenge.

Hi Michael. I haven't attempted to create reflections from scratch. That is nigh on impossible and would be madness to attempt in an image that pivots upon reflections. One of the reasons I thought of dancers is that it was a way of finding plenty of images of people in front of mirrors that could adapt to this challenge. Whilst all other reflections are created entirely by me the four dancers and their reflections are real. One of the things I discovered in my searches is that real reflections are full of surprises and not always what we might expect. Here are the two that concerned you.

That being said they are both taken from a slightly lower eye-line than Steve's and taken from slightly closer on a wider angle making the reflections a little too small relative to the figure than would be the case in the perspective of Steve's picture. I had to increase them slightly and this did cause me struggles.

I think this may have caused anomalies that your sharp eye has picked up on. (Or, since Steve has been in grammar correcting mode recently, "...... upon which your sharp eye has picked." )

Not sure what I can do except find other pictures ......

I spent a lot of time on this already I think I will have to let it rest.

Reply to David Mac. The robot supermarket exists - you can see at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DKrcpa8Z_E&t=10s

David, I read your mention of the bevel problem before I started and took it as an extra challenge. Its getting late so I will check out the perspective when I am more awake.
Did you notice the store email address?
Really enjoyed your image, technically quite difficult.
Thanks, Ben
