Challenge 990: Landed in gaol
A recent visit to Canterbury took me to a museum which included this gaol at the top of one of its towers. The mockup with the mannequin is sort of OK, but it doesn't really give much sense of what it must have been like to be incarcerated there, despite the plastic rats.

Can you help?

High res is here.

Re: Challenge 990: Landed in gaol
Steve I have a question. It's not really directly challenge related but I am curious.

It's not evident in the small image but in the large image we can clearly see what looks like a small iron fireplace - complete with ash surround and hearthstone. The gaol dates back to 1453. I don't think cast iron fireplaces existed then and, anyway, nobody warmed gaols in those days! I thought maybe a more recent addition after the room's function as a gaol had finished but the 'fireback', if that's what it is, has CITY GAOL cast in it.

I wondered, since you were there in person, if you could cast any light on this bizarre little alcove.

Sorry gov, we needed the room for genuine asylum seekers so we let him go.

As with many buildings dating from this period, the city gaol underwent many changes of use, having been a military stronghold, a police station and even a music school. It's quite possible the fireplace dates from one of these later incarnations.

Yes seems the sensible guess.

I got rather lost for ideas on this one so I've settled simply for atmosphere. If it's this gloomy on a sunny day a dull rainy one definitely isn't going to be uplifting.

This really needs viewing away from bright light.

Another of those 'if you don't have a good idea, make fun of the master' ideas.

This also needs viewing away from strong light.

By the way. The legs of this skeleton come from the HTCP CS2 CDROM. Must be a collector's item now!

Found myself on a bit of a roll. The poor lad was just looking for some inspiration

Bit short on ideas ...... so lots of lighting fun this week.

This is the last.

Thanks to Loyd for the man in the iron mask.
