Autostitch: to make panoramas... update in the last page
...extremely easily. This is a free beta of a software that makes panoramic pictures from a bunch of individual shots. No need to pick the sequence or adjust anything. Setup the size in the option menu, open the files and wait. Once the testing date is passed, just go back and download again. No installation, unzip and use! Brilliant!

or www.autostitch.net directly

From some Artificial Intelligence research at University of British Columbia (that's canadian, a...)

One of mine, from 6 pictures:

This is Colioure, France, 60km from the Spanish border, summer 2005

I am really impressed. Did you not have to do any cloning or fixing on the seams?

Re: Autostitch: to make panoramas...
Here is a 5 picture pano shot today of the development where I live. The camera was handheld with an 18mm lens which will account for the wobbly tops and the uncorrected perspective.

Pano 1 is the output and Pano 2 is the result of cropping and cloning.

I always want 100% quality and JPEG value of 100 which gives me the highest quality I can get out of the pano. All other dimention and quality downsizing I do through PS. One thing to note - when it is working out what to do with all those pixels it does tend to sit there as though it has crashed! Have faith it is probably OK!! There has been no work done on the seams. Autostitch takes care of that.

Pano 1

Pano 2. I had to do this over two postings as the limit would have been breached. If you want to have a go at me over the quality of the cloning - thats OK as it was done quickly as an excercise for this demo.

I concurr. You do nothing about contrast, ligthness, lens warping or anything prior to slecting the files to stitch together. Actually I use the same settings as Ted, and yes it does seem to go to sleep.

I then use Photoshop to clone things in and out, crop, patch holes (they dont happen often) and do other artsy stuff. Another example, before and after, of a 15 shots pano.

The Padirac cave, in the Cahors area of France. This leads to an underground river that you visit on a small boat ride and then walk in the cave. Go see this, impressive (photographs not allowed inside...)

unbelievable. These are not my greatest pictures but this is 6 pictures stiched together in under 5 minutes. I used to spend hours on the joins.

Ah the relentless march of technology!
I remember the old days when we had to stitch panos together with needle and thread.

Re: Autostitch: to make panoramas...
I just had to try it. Amazing stuff.

My picture is 14 pictures sewn together. The original is about 16000x2000 px. The one you see here is about 3000x400 px and very low JPEG setting to fit within the 100k limit, hence the bad resolution.

I have done this panorama manually before and it took many hours to finish, involved matching colors, &c, &c. Autostitch takes all that away, I didn't time the process, but it couldn't have been more than 15 minutes before it was completed.

Dalton I think you managed to download a pre-release alpha minus version. There have been improvements since then. eg: It works!

Edit: Oh shoot!!! I've just seen the date!!!!!!!!

Pierre, we are going to be near the Cahors region when we go to France for Easter time. Thanks for the inspiration to visit the Padirac cave.

Autostitch - great programme. Hadn't managed to get a decent version of this image with PS. You get more sense of the scale, it's the mens camp at Auschwitz - gypsy block on the right

Please go there Ted. It is amazing. You go down this 100m diameter hole (my previous panos) and then walk into the cave with a guide for 250 meters, take the small boat ride with the guide again and listen to your echo in the water as you are looking at this great natural ceiling, walk again for another 400 meters or so and come back. The whole thing takes about 1 hour to 1 hour and a half. I did it with my 6 and 11 year old girls and they really enjoyed.

It should be easy enough for you retirees...

Re: Autostitch: to make panoramas...
Autostitch is great for panoramas, but don't forget to use it when you are stuck in a corner.
Here is the orginal 3 shots, plus the finished version.
