A tutorial on paths would be nice. I still can't get to grips with them. The curves never fit the shape I am trying to trace. |

A tutorial on the basics of creating different brushes would be great. Maybe explaining what the different tools options mean. As well as how to properly save the single brush you just modified from a set of default brushes. |

Chris (tank172), take a look at this brush tutorial: http://www.arraich.com/ps6_tips_7brushes1.htm -- This goes over PS 7 brushes and the tool options but it essentially applies to CS and CS2 as well. I'm pretty busy this week (haven't even had a chance to work on the Friday challenge yet!). But, if no one steps up by next week, I'd be willing to do a short tutorial on creating and saving a basic sampled brush. |

1. click on the starting point. 2. click next further on on what you are wanting to select BUT DO NOT UNCLICK. Start pulling the mouse along and you will be drawing out a handle which you can move back and forth to establish the path between points 1 and 2. Unclick. 3. reclick on point 2 and while you are still clickedWh on #2 hit the ALT button. This will get rid of the handle. 4. Now go on and establish point 3 the same way. 5. When you are back to the strting point you will see a tiny little "O". 6. At the bottom of the paths palette you will see a small dotted circle. When you click on the dotted circle the path will turn into the marching ants of a selection. I don't know if this the best way to do this but it works for me and somehow I use this method of selection more than any other |

Another request: Can someone explain in simple terms all the different layer modes? You know the "Normal, Dissolve, Darken, Multiply,..." Some of these are obvious but in other cases it is difficult to anticipate the effect of a mode on the layer's colors and transparencies... I know, i is in the help files...but it is not simple reading... A tutorial-type explanation would be more efficient I think... Please? _________________ |

Oops... I started gong through the book at Christmas time.... I'm to the metal effects at pages 242-247. I completely forgot about the suit for the gentleman... Sorry!

A simple way to do this is: 1. Open a new document. 2. Create a new layer. 3. Fill the layer with grey. 4. Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Make sure it's set to Gaussian and the monochrome box is checked. The amount depends on the size of the document and the coarseness of the brushed effect you require. Click OK. 5. Now go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Again, the settings depend on the look you require. 6. Press Ctrl/Cmd+T to enter free transform. Stretch the box outside of the document bounds. This will get rid of the harsh edges. 7. You can use the Levels dialog (Ctrl/Cmd+L) to alter the brightness and contrast to taste. 8. Add your text beneath the layer you just created 9. Go back to your aluminium layer by clicking its thumbnail in the layer palette 10. Go to Layer > Group With Previous 11. You can also add a bevel Layer Style to the text, if desired.

David, Step 10, I don't have a "Group With Previous" in the Layers menu. I am using CS2, has this changed for this version? Thanks. Sorry, please ignore. I have found how to do it. |

Web Page Comp Tutorial
Hello Everyone. I know that this site is primarily about photo montage, and Steve's work is mainly for newspapers / magazines, but would it be possible for somebody to create a tutorial about creating web page comps? Designing for variable width. Header image designs. Faux Columns etc etc I purchased a book on the subject "Photoshop & Dreamweaver Integration by Colin Smith", but it didn't cover the techniques he used to get the design he had created. "Now create the header image, it could be a photo, a flat colour or a custom design like mine" I purchased the book hoping to learn the custom design elements etc. How to create sidebar backgrounds etc. I know this stuff is probably too basic for the majority of you, but as they say "It is only easy, if you know the answer." I know the basics of HTML / XHTML and CSS but my graphics design skills severely need improving. Thanks for your help. |
