Luminosity Of An Image (PS Tip)

To change the Luminosity of an image without harming the color create a “Black and White” adjustment layer above it and change its Blend Mode to “luminosity”. Now you can adjust the different color sliders to brighten/darken respective colors without harming the color.

Yes. Very clever!

In similar vein you can use luminosity layers for extreme sharpening without colour artefacts. Duplicate the layer to be sharpened and convert the upper layer to black and white. Apply the conversion so that it really is a true monochrome layer. Set this layer to "luminosity" and apply the sharpening to it. I've cured quite a few problem images in this way. You can make it a smart object and thus leave the sharpening adjustable.

Yes that would certainly do it as Luminosity blend ignores color.

Re: Luminosity Of An Image (PS Tip)
I have been playing with this and it's one of the best and most genuinely useful tips I have ever seen. You have to be careful not to overdo it but it really works and does something hard to do so simply any other way.

I must confess to never really having been able to get my head round using blend modes on adjustments. I have played a few times but results seem hard to understand and can be downright confusing.

So does anyone else have tricks they use with blend modes on adjustment layers? Or does anyone have links to a good explanation of blend modes as they apply specifically to adjustment layers?

Frank you have really piqued my curiosity ....... and thanks for such a useful technique.
