Install font without file extension on Mac
I have a copy of "Art & Design in Photoshop" that includes some fonts on a CD that comes with the book. These font files do not have file extensions.

I am using a Mac. The book says that to install the fonts on a Mac, you should double click the files and press the Install Font button.

However, when I double click on the files, the terminal opens and I get a message like this:

Last login: Mon Oct 11 16:24:26 on console /Volumes/080716_1026/Fonts/Aquiline\ Two/Aquil ; exit; Paul-Reiners-iMac-4:~ paulreiners1685$ /Volumes/080716_1026/Fonts/Aquiline\ Two/Aquil ; exit; logout

[Process completed]

I don't think this installed the font, because I don't see it listed in the Font Book.

Next, I tried copying the files to the following directory:

/System/Library/Fonts

That didn't seem to work either, though.

Finally, Font Book wouldn't let me add the fonts. They were 'grayed-out' in the file selector (presumably because the files have no extension).

How, exactly, do I install these fonts?

Re: Install font without file extension on Mac
Paul,

While most of the fonts on the CD are TrueType (.ttf) fonts, a few of them are the earlier Postscript Type 1 format. On the Mac, these fonts don't have extensions, probably because the format was devised before extensions were brought in on a Mac - they had to be installed using a special software installer. (I'm assuming, by the way, that you're not having any difficulty installing the TrueType fonts.)

I've just tried installing the Aquiline font you mentioned from the CD, on my Mac, and have had no problem with it. Double-clicking the file opened FontBook, complete with Install button.

PostScript fonts come in two parts: in the case of the Aquiline font you mention, these are a printer font Aquil and a screen font Aquiline.t1. Double-clicking either should open FontBook.

The lack of an extension does mean the Mac can occasionally get confused. I tried adding and then removing a different extension to the Aquil file, and after that double-clicking would open FontBook but wouldn't install the font.

I'd recommend copying the files over again from the CD, in case they got corrupted somehow.

Can I just check - which version of OS X are you running?

Just found a TrueType version of Aquiline here:

http://www.dafont.com/aquiline-two.font

Try it - you may find it installs more easily.

Steve,

Yes, thanks! That's what I ended up doing.
