05.01 Stage 7
Dear Steve,
Just stuck at stage 7.
clipping: just put the duplicate sheet on top and "Alt" drag it to clip it. This did not fill the white background fill of type eg the $100,000 is still white. Do I darken with brush or playing opacity/fill?

I dont just get the glue thing. any step by step please?

I m just impressed with both your 100% photoshop and this book which I own.

kindest regards

Re: 05.01 Stage 7
Totti,

Sorry if this step isn't clear - the problem of too little space and too much to say!

1. It looks from your screen shot as if you've duplicated the background texture correctly, and used the scraps of paper layer as a clipping mask. It's hard to see at the size you've supplied the screen shot (hint - use File > Save for Web to reduce image size instead of pixel size) but it appears that the Fill value of this layer is set to 0%. Set this to 100% - or, frankly, any value other than zero - and you should be able to see it!

2. For the glue, start by making a new layer beneath the paper scraps. Paint the glue on here in gray, so you can just see it leaking out behind the pieces of paper - it should be barely visible. Then use Color Balance to add some red and yellow to that gray. This will give it more of a glue-like appearance.

When you've painted the glue and tinted it, use Layer Styles to add a Bevel & Emboss style to it - the default settings will probably be enough. This will give the glue a bit of texture. Then, when you've done that, experiment with reducing the opacity of the whole glue layer if it seems too strong.

Does this help?

Steve

Hi Steve. sorry for not coming straight as I've been a bit sick.

I'm also sorry if I dont get this simple thing as I'm still new to photoshop.
let's break this step 7 in 2 parts.

PART 1: clip scraps of paper with crumpled sheet:
- ( I mousse over between "copy of sheet" on top and "scraps" as I press hold ALT to clip) to fill that imagery with layer beneath(scrap of paper)
- set blend mode to Hard Light
- darken ??? in my case I reduced opacity to 37. Is this correct? if not HOW should I darken? with what tool (Burn Tool ?)

PART2:
- I put a new layer just underneath scrap. ( am I correct ?, if not where?)
- In the glue part, what is "paint the glue" as I'm still reading on photoshop and haven't yet come across this glue painting technique?
this is exactly where I need you Steve.
How to paint a Glue.
Sort me here and I should surely be on my way.
kindest rgds

You're nearly there!

1. You have the texture layer correctly making a Clipping Mask of the layer beneath. When I say to darken the whole layer, use Curves to achieve this: there's a very brief tutorial on page 238. (There wasn't room in Art & Design for a full explanation of all Photoshop's tools and adjustments, but this should give you a start).

Reducing the Opacity of the layer simple makes the layer's visibility less strong - it will have the opposite effect to the what you're trying to achieve.

2. There's no "glue painting technique" - just paint in grey on a new layer, like the one you've created. Use a hard-edged brush, and paint where you want the glue to appear. The effect you want is just to see a small amount of glue leaking out from beneath each scrap of paper.

It won't look like glue at first, it will just look like grey paint. But when you add the Bevel to it, it will take on a more rounded texture.

I love the way you've created this ransom note to show how lost you are!

Thanks Steve.
I was confused by the word glue, but when you explained what you meant, things couldn't be clearer and simpler.

This is what I managed to deliver.

I really appreciate
