Brick Texture
Hi

Have hit a problem with Stage 6 on the bricks. I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac and don't seem to have Filter > Render > Lighting Effects. Can anyone suggest why or how I work round this, please?

Enjoying the book so far and very grateful for this forum on previous sticky bits.

Regards

Ooops! Now opening Photoshop in 32 bit mode and have Lighting Effects.

Bricks still need work though!

Re: Brick Texture
Welcome to the forum, Lex - do make full use of it!

Glad you managed to get that 32-bit mode thing sorted out. It is really irritating that Lighting Effects hasn't yet been updated to work in 64-bit.

Re: Brick Texture
Hello Everyone,

I am having a couple of problems in Chapter 1 where I am running Photoshop CS5 Extended (32 or 64-bit) on a 64-bit laptop.

First, on the "Roughening the bricks" section I am not able to get the "Filter > Distort > Glass" effect to show any roughness whatsoever, although other filters seem to work fine.

Second, on "Rendering with Lightening Effects" section I am not able to view the brick wall in the preview pane in 32 or 64-bit modes.

I just got all three books: How to Cheat in Photoshop CS5, Art & Design in Photoshop, and 100% Photoshop based on the strong reviews on Amazon and I am finding them an indispensable resource as I learn Photoshop.

Thanks in advance.

John

Re: Brick Texture
Found a great thread on this topic that I missed when I initially searched the forum before posting my original question which should help me out.

Re: Brick Texture
Glad you managed to get this one sorted out, John - that brick texture has stumped a lot of people. I've reworked the tutorial, and you can download it here.

Welcome to the forum!

Re: Brick Texture
Thanks for the reworked tutorial, Steve, which I just downloaded and am looking forward going through today.

Thanks also for the welcome to the Reader Forum which I am finding is an invaluable learning resource in itself which not only supplements the books, but keeps them alive as living and breathing documents ever growing as a knowledge base through your words and the words of its members and find myself making notes and bookmarking many of these suggestions as I learn Photoshop.

Again, I am really enjoying going through your three books: How to Cheat in Photoshop CS5, Art & Design in Photoshop, and 100% Photoshop as I learn the art, science, and real world application of Photoshop and sometimes find myself missing a meal and going to bed in the early morning hours whenever I get a chance to open up any of the books as I have such a hard time putting them down once I get started.

Again thanks so much to you for your books and the generous support of yourself and all of the members on the Reader Forum.

John

Re: Brick Texture
Found some time tonight to finish going through the reworked tutorial which was a great help. With my next go around I will pay special attention to the color of the bricks and mortar which need some work as can be seen in the attached screenshot. Thanks, John

Re: Brick Texture
John - yes, that looks like you've cracked it. When duplicating the two rows of bricks, though, you do need to make sure the spacing between them is the same as the space between the original pair of rows.
