Challenge 751: St Martin's in the Fields
We had a Challenge from this splendid church some time ago, when I asked you to colour in the magnificent window. Here's a view of the outside. It was called St Martin's in the Fields when it was built back in 1726, but now that Trafalgar Square has grown up around it, it no longer enjoys such a bucolic atmosphere. Can you put it back into the countryside? Apologies to Mariner for the shadow of the National Gallery, you're going to have to contend with that. And to anyone else who notices such things. To say nothing of biting the bullet on rebuilding the entire bottom metre and a half or so .............or, of course, finding a way not to. Interesting one this. A little research shows that when the present church was built in 1722 the immediate area was already completely built up - not a field in sight. To find them you have to go a lot further back to a different church building entirely. This one was much, much harder than I expected. Went down several blind alleys on the way. David, the inscription on the church reads D : SACRAM AEDEM : S : MARTINI PAROCHIANI EXTRUI FEC AD MDCCXXVI which translates as 'The parishioners of St. Martin caused the Church, sacred to God, to be built in 1726.' which suggests that there was no church until 1726. Oh dear, maybe we should stay on message! 
[EDIT] Wikipedia gives earlier references going back to 1222. The game is back on David! |

Now that is erudite and clever ....... ! Yes Wikipedia was my source. According to it this one is a 'new build' comparatively speaking. I found maps of the St Martins area from the time of the construction of the present church. Thanks! It was fun to do. To be truthful I had already made the underwater island for a quite different personal project. So all I had to do was add the church to the island and the wreck of the 'Theresa May' in the foreground. Just seemed to fit nicely somehow ........ Yours looks like it's been transported to rural America. This week's challenge is identical to the one ten years ago where I spent hours removing all the people then reconstructing the steps and railings, so today I've dug it up and added animated rippling water.
PLESE NOTE You may have to wait 10 secs or so for the animated water to seamlessly move smoothly
