These are very clever Michael.

I love the photographic city sitting by the almost Japanese stylised waves. Is the tiny city and giant tsunami intentional symbolism for our possible future?

I would love to know how you did the glass effects. There appears to be more than one technique involved. I like the reversed number in the view from inside.

The last is a really brave attempt but somehow the glass looks like transparent steel. As you said earlier this is quite a difficult challenge. Tiny note. Given the symmetry of the image you would not see the left side of the rear "2" unless it has been damaged and twisted.

Ah! Just spotted your title. Missed it before. Answers my question.

Thank you, David, but I was in alien territory and I struggled to get some things right.

I would love to know how you did the glass effects. There appears to be more than one technique involved. I like the reversed number in the view from inside.

First I drew each object using vector graphics - very easy to correct. I added a stroke and a layer effect to each one. Then I found a lot of etched / stained glass patterns on the net and shrank them to squares about the right size. These were then nested into the shapes. The scenic background gives the picture credibility, and the layer effects allowed it to be seen through the "etching". With the numbers and plain glass border I simply cut out bits of the scenery and plonked them on top.

The last is a really brave attempt but somehow the glass looks like transparent steel. As you said earlier this is quite a difficult challenge. Tiny note. Given the symmetry of the image you would not see the left side of the rear "2" unless it has been damaged and twisted.

Yes, I failed on this one. I watched a video on youtube which gave a beautiful result, but it was very long and extremely complicated. I watched it three times then gave up and did my own thing with bevel and emboss and anything else I could think of. It took many hours to create the numbers from scratch and, yes, the rear "2" is not right. Finally I got tired of it and gave up. Oh well. One learns from experience.

The last two entries Michael are stunningly beautiful: this is you at your best, and...I'm sure the CEO is really going to like these particularly when you have put so much effort into them.

Thank you, Michael. I feel sure the Guru will like at least one of my entries.

Mariner, they are all stunning however the stained glass gets my vote. You've done an incredible job with it.

Re: Challenge 888: Happy IYOG 2022
Michael I was so impressed by your stained glass I decided to have a try. Not as an entry but simply as a learning exercise to what could be done.

What really gets me is the 'swirly' glass in the central ellipse. Obviously you have taken one design and flipped X and Y to arrive at the symmetry, but how did you arrive at those marvellous wave patterns? I couldn't find anything like them on the web. Did you create these yourself from a regular hammered glass using liquify? When I tried it I lost too much definition, which is not the case in your image. For me its that central portion that makes this so special.

I forgot to mention your Princess Zozzarzlla image. What really gets me is not just the wonderful classic Mariner simplicity and cleanness but how you ever made the connection in your mind to create it!

David, last question first:
David wrote

ade the connection in your mind to create it!

It was obvious from the start that you couldn't make very much out of the figures 2022 except, well, four figures. So I turned thiem around on the screen and soon noticed that they could be seen as the letters zozz. That could be a name, maybe? Now, from the last challenge in Malta I had downloaded a rather beautiful picture of a Roman woman who had no jewelry around her neck. Putting 2 and 2 together (no pun intended) I realized that I could add a necklace and glass pendant with her name, Zozz, stamped on it. But then I would have to explain to the viewers what Zozz really meant. So I thought mozzarella, Zozzarella! Eureka! Mozzarella comes, I think, from Calabria, down south, so I made her a princess of Calabria. Then I got Google to translate it for me into Italian Principessa di Calabria.

I am always amazed by the unexpected connections that are sometimes made here. There is something about the simplicity of this I find really satisfying and the execution is nigh on faultless!

David, thank you. Now for the first part of your question:

David wrote

Yes, here is the original. As you said I flipped it X and Y. To find the wave patterns I googled "etched glass" or "frosted glass", I can't remember which, and there are a lot of them, so it would take some time to find it again. Also, the layer effects with a background improve the contrast, as does the Brightness/Contrast tool. You just have to experiment. Have fun!

Re: Challenge 888: Happy IYOG 2022
David, I thought I had lost part of my previous answer, so here is a repeat:
As you say I just flipped this left to right, then top to bottom to create symmetry. Having a layer effect on the mother layer can also improve contrast, as can the Brightness/Contrast tool etc etc. You can have a lot of fun experimenting with this.
I found this texture by googling "etched glass texture", or "frosted glass texture", I can't rmember which. You are spoiled for choice. It would be hard to find it again on the net, but I can post it on flickr and give you a link if you want.

Re: Challenge 888: Happy IYOG 2022
No need. I was simply curious as to whether you had found it or created it. The rest I had already discovered from your previous answer.

Thank you David and Michael.

I have had very little time to look at look at all the submissions forFC 888 but I see many excellent images. I hesitate to pick out any in particular but I do like Michael’s stained glass.

Well done everyone and I look forward to seeing all your efforts in 2022.
