Love this Loyd. Just everything about it.

Re: Challenge 909: Le Mignonisme
This one is cheating because it doesn't contain any elements from Steve's photo but there's something about the slightly silly simplicity that I find rather sweet.

Yours does have a certain subtle charm about it David, whereas mine has all the subtlety of opening a carton of eggs with a 'claw hammer'...

This is a challenge based around such a silly subject that subtlety is likely to be a rare commodity .......... and, quite possibly, a not very useful or even desirable one.

Bubble gum Sumo!

This is great!

I think there are some reflection anomalies, but that's really hard to do.
The application of the tattoo is terrific and the boy is immaculately chosen and fitted. I am very curious - did you actually manage to find him like that or did you have to re-model and pose him?

Thank you David, Loyd.

Yes, David, to get those reflections really accurate would have taken me another couple of days, which I didn't have.
It took me hours of searching to find a boy who was pointing in about the right direction. I had to darken his body to suit the background, sharpen him up, and move his head so he was looking at his mother. She took a long time too, but I love the work, so why not?

So much of the work often lies not in the razzmatazz we all see but in the tiny details we take for granted.

Thanks David.

I have made a new post in link fest with a web link about an amazing feature from the new Photoshop Beta (which can be obtained by going into Creative Cloud and scrolling down to Photoshop Beta!)

Some nice work here 2 Michaels, Loyd, David, on a somewhat difficult subject. Love the "Jelly Blobs" idea.

Re: Challenge 909: Le Mignonisme
First to get cute with Les Mignonists this week was lwc, with a splendidly trippy animation. I like how you’ve arranged a whole row of them back to back, and the swirling background. The huge version in the second entry is fun, the people giving it a great sense of scale; and the hot air balloon is a bonus. I enjoyed the elephants in the third entry, although perhaps the one on the left should be facing the other way so the Mignonist looks less like a proctologist (unless this is the metaphorical equivalent of putting toothpaste back into a tube). And the fourth entry is of course hugely boosted by the appearance of the moose. The fifth entry is fantastic, with its bumping cars; the high speed drive-past of last week’s Challenge really makes it. Small point, though: those shadows should move with the cars.

I too have seen those Toon Blast games, and DavidMac's ingenious reconstruction is a real masterwork. The huge concrete pads, the pointy spikes with their shadows, all fantastic - but what really does it for me is the intricate cutouts on the coloured boxes. Fantastic work, David. So sorry to hear you have the plague. Here’s to a speedy recovery. Good to see you’re still able to get to your computer for your second entry - that’s a cute circus scene, making good use of all the angles. And I like the bus in the third entry: the pink suitcase really sets it off. I assume that’s a real La Rochelle bus, as I can’t imagine you’d have chosen that background for any other reason.

The Mignonists in Ant Snell’s entry fit well onto that bookshelf, and it’s good that you’ve found different angles of view. Why are all the objects on the shelves so low res, though? It looks as if they’ve been shrunk and then expanded. Or is it just a lot of JPEG compression?

I enjoyed Frank's Welcome to a Friday Challenge animation, which perhaps should start every week’s Challenge. The Hold Back Old Age animation is really charming: the hair is beautifully drawn, but it’s those pulsating hands that really get me. And, of course, the creeping baldness and bulging bellies. Excellent.

The Mignonist in Mariner's entry is profusely decorated, with tattoo-like artwork spreading across it. And, of course, you’ve set yourself the extra challenge of having the scene reflected in the mirror, which raises a few issues. Would we be able to see the reflection of the tattoo that’s on the front of the Mignonist’s hip? What is that hard shaded curve reflected at bum height, and why does it run over the side of the hip? And are the elements so precisely arranged that the boy’s reflection is entirely obscured?

A fun dance from michael sinclair, really bringing life to the characters. But why the lack of background? Did you run out of time, or just get bored? Actually, the plain background does remind me of Stubbs’ Whistlejacket in the National Gallery. And the packed-out second entry, very neatly constructed, puts me in mind of the jar of moles at the Grant Museum of Zoology.

Well, Steve, David commented earlier on this and I replied:
...David, to get those reflections really accurate would have taken me another couple of days, which I didn't have...

That's because I spent a lot of time on this challenge on those tattoos and other things and I was getting worried that I could easily miss the deadline, so I had to move on.
Thanks for what looked at first like a stupid challenge, but actually turned out to be very challenging!

The computer game image was fun but tricky to do. The blocks, spikes, etc. were built in matched 3D.

I am 'recovered' now inasmuch as I am out of the fever and real nasties, but it's left me feeling very tired and a bit 'foggy'. Doing the challenge has been really good therapy.

I assume that’s a real La Rochelle bus, as I can’t imagine you’d have chosen that background for any other reason.

Strangely finding a suitable parked bus back view of any kind was really difficult. The tendency is for everyone to photograph them from the front. The one I used was the best candidate 'buswise' so I went with it despite the horrible background.

Yes, I've been trying to figure out a 'work-around' for that issue. Maybe next time... thanks Steve!
