Challenge 921: L'Abbaye

The abbey of Notre Dame de Ré was built on the Ile de Ré in the 12th century, but for some reason fell into ruin (and I can't for the life of me imagine how anyone could let this happen).

A couple of personal challenges this week:

Mariner, restore it to it original glory.

Michael Sinclair, blow it up.

The rest of you: if you came into possession of this magnificent ruin, how would you go about converting it into a habitable dwelling?

High res is here.

After two false starts with attempts to be on brief I gave up for now and decided to simply put something together that I liked.

L'Abbaye avec son Potager
At first I was tempted to skip this one. It didn't really grab me.

Then I decided to turn it into a purely technical exercise in matched perspective and materials and to try to produce a result that was so completely seamless that one would't suspect it was 'shopped'.

You must all be the best judge of whether I have succeeded ................

Fairly conventional rebuild. Will have a go at something less so if I have the time.

David, you succeeded brilliantly in a very short time, and I really like the window and door in the near end, and the roofing tiles, and the vegetable garden. However that big square window at the far end looks a bit too modern for a gothic building.

Hi Michael. I think you have misunderstood my intent. This is not a restoration. Steve's challenge was:

The rest of you: if you came into possession of this magnificent ruin, how would you go about converting it into a habitable dwelling?

I have chosen to do a conversion that in part restores and in part modernises.

Whether that is good architecture or even a sensitive treatment is, of course, another question entirely.

Nice work so far everybody.

I'm unable to fulfil Steve's request on account that I only blow-up things I don't like such as modern art, weird furniture, dolls, and buildings (particularly French); this building, however, is an old, venerated abbey (that has had its fair share of troubles) which does not offend.

PLEASE SEE MUCH IMPROVED VERSION

David, absolutely perfect save for the hue of the sky relative to foreground hue: here is a "Before and after" the second image after hue adjustment is perfect.

PS did you get the MP4?

Well now that's remarkably observant Michael! You are quite right. There is a mismatch. Somehow I have managed to let a slight green bias creep into the foreground.

I think, however, I prefer to correct this by removing the green from the foreground rather than add it to the sky.

Spot on David! I really like this, as it isn't common to see this degree of accuracy: not a whiff of Photoshop to be seen. How much are they asking for this converted abbey? Is the internet connection good? And what's the bus service like?

Re: Challenge 921: L'Abbaye
Well I am not sure after all the effort to convert that I want to part with it. So it's not on the market.

Bus et internet à part, les voisins ne parlent que français.

Re: Challenge 921: L'Abbaye

After waiting several weeks for a new computer, my Mac Studio finally arrived. I feel like I've been reunited with a long lost friend.

Anna, I'm very pleased that you're back and that you've have nice new computer.

I like your animation (as usual) which brings me to the point that your work is always of a consistent high standard ; however, the monastery on the rock static image is not right: it looks fake! Moreover, the shading of the rock and the abbey are in conflict.
