Just to prove that I'm still alive.

Sorry no comments or compliments this week. Just got back and too hard put to finish.

Not quite sure why I picked to create such a very unpleasant image ...... lot of work too.

Hello Vibeke nice to hear from you again.

David, I'm happy to say that is a very convincing image: the castle looks real, and the people look real: it's not fake!

Re: Challenge 1027: Halloweeeeeen!
First to get into the Halloween spirit this week was lwc, with a bat-infested castle complete with vampire and horse-drawn hearse. I like the ingenuity of the symmetry. Can’t help thinking the scene would be more dramatic if you turned a light on somewhere. I enjoyed the flying broomstick entry, with its creeping – er – werewolf? The moon adds a useful break to the symmetry. Splendid wafting on the spookhouse banner – I recognise that shading technique. A fine cast of Halloween ghouls entertaining that line of kids, too. I particularly like the version with the half ruined tower, which both breaks the symmetry nicely and adds a lot of visual interest. The ghost is cute. Bizarre goings-on in the pumpkin-headed knight entry (you can tell I’m having trouble coming up with these names), with flaming demons through the openings. The added chimney works very well. I like the treatment of the floating child ghost – very atmospheric. And a truly startling close-up vampire!

A clever integration into La Rochelle’s harbour towers from Ben Boardman, with added windows and a doorway – hard to see clearly at this size! And I like the twin tower version. Only slight issue is that we’re looking up at the crenellations, but from this angle they should be flatter:

A fun-packed scene from Frank, full of ghoulish elements. I like the framing between the trees and the pumpkins, and the lighting is spectacular. That figure with the knife makes a good, sinister focal point. Does the door jump out a bit too much, though?

A fine perimeter wall to michael sinclair’s sandcastle, neatly blending in with the original. I like how you’ve removed the brick texture. I see where you’re going with the shading, but look at the towers on the sandcastle behind: they’re all lit from the right with shadow on the left, even those on the far left of the tower. So I think each of your towers should be individually lit:

Hope you’re recovering, Michael.

A lot of Halloween additions from Ant Snell, interestingly done while leaving the church untouched – although with much improved lighting. What a lot of characters you’ve employed here! a lot to take in. The angry Trump pumpkin is very fine.

Oh! Hello Vibeke! Alive, yes, but clearly friends with the Undead. A very atmospheric entry, with swirling mist and a brace of vampires. I particularly like the carriage waiting around the corner, and the way the bats appear to fly out of the moon. So good to see you back!

A truly extraordinary witch-burning scene from DavidMac, with an agonised-looking witch (as well she might be) and plenty of onlookers in holy orders. An outstanding composition, with cleverly woven symmetry – I like extended side walls and the rear tower placement. The lighting, of course, is beautiful. Just one niggle: the crowd in front of the gate seem to be standing on a slight hill, but the figure at the front of the crowd looks either too small or too low down in the scene. Moving the foreground monks to the right would have fixed this, as well as disrupting the symmetry of the composition.

Point well taken. Yes - all sorts of inconsistency. That was the last part of the image I did and it was too rushed. The hardest part of the whole image was assembling mediaeval crowds. Not unsurprisingly photographs of this are not forthcoming aside from clinically sterile AI images with clean figures that look as if they come from Disneyland, which I really disliked and didn't want to use. In the end I had to assemble the crowds from numerous cutouts from pictures of modern mediaeval reconstructions. Difficult, because these are always dancing or playing instruments or posing grinning at camera, none of which were suitable for my context.

A fun challenge Steve. Thanks!

That was my favorite, the most time consuming and the most satisfying to make… many thanks Steve!

Thanks Steve, I noticed that door but decided to leave it to make it look more inviting for potential guests/ victims.
