Re: Challenge 265: Performance space
Another impressive week, with some highly imaginative entries and some seriously good Photoshop work.

First to climb on the plinth was GKB, with an Air Chief Marshall neatly mirroring the figure of Nelson in the background. An excellent shot of the statue, at just he right angle: and the passing Spitfire is a great touch. Use Shadows/Highlights to lift the deepest shadow on the figure a little, and this will be perfect.

A neat nest from Ben Mills. Perfect choice of angle, and the canvas texture works surprisingly well in this instance, along with the shadow inside the frame. What? No pigeons?

A well placed bucking bronco from mguyer - a very good fit, and a good scale for the plinth. The silver lettering is a nice touch, at a good angle.

Hilarious work from tooquilos, whose all-dancing tightrope artiste certainly knows how to deal with hecklers. The sound really makes this one - fantastic!

Completely convincing work from gaoxiguo, with a sundial at exactly the right angle and perfect carving on the side. The net has been removed with great skill, and the plinth rebuilt under it. Excellent!

I saw Pink Floyd play at Live8, so Nick Curtain's entry is particularly resonant for me. It's also a terrific day-to-night scene: the few lit-up windows in the building in the background, the subtle light from the spotlights, and the beautifully lit figure of Gilmour on the plinth - most enjoyable. All we need is the soundtrack to go with it. Great Gig in the Sky, anyone? Not sure about the revised lighting in the second entry: the original had more purity and simplicity.

An opera scene from Jonvee Leo, with two performers neatly placed in the middle of an opera. I think we need the sound with this one!

”Working without a net" is the title of brewell'sentry, and there in deed is the performer netless. Not just without the net, but without the frame as well: a skilful and meticulous rebuilding job on the background and on the plinth itself. This one must have been a hell of a lot of work!

Strangely, the plinth does have the feel of the kind of submarine turret a spaceship might have - something that didn't occur to me until maiden brought it to life. A moody, brooding spaceship, and the eclipsed planet behind it adds to the sense of menace. I don’t know why, but this one really works well.

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but Les Moore does have a bit of a fondness for night scenes. And here he is back in hell, with roaring flames and demons on pillars. Beautifully accomplished, with excellent ‘Hell’ lettering - not so sure about the digital rendering of the text beneath. Best thing here, for me, is the translucent wings on the bat. Very powerful work.

An amazing gymnastic display from james, who has entirely mastered the art of rearranging body parts. I love the way Nelson turns around and opens up his telescope - what a great touch! James, you will have to talk to Anna about adding music to these...

A dazzlingly good entry from LonnieK: the way the plinth has been cracked up behind the iron frame is astounding, and the pose of Godzilla is absolutely perfect for the scene. As is the cropping: the decision not to show the head, but just the flames, must have been tough but is exactly the right one. Lonnie, I’m really knocked out by this one. Glorious.

A clever shuttle launch from Neal, whose apparent simplicity belies its skill. Look at how well the smoke integrates into the scene, sometimes going behind the ropes and plinth, sometimes in front. Neat work!

A really cute idea from Jota120, lifting the plinth on a balloon (and that must be quite some balloon, to lift a large stone plinth). The alternate view of Trafalgar Square is well chosen, and I like the extra touches like the flame and the faint spotlights. Is the guitar player buried up to the waist in the plinth, though? Not sure the second entry is an improvement... leave those spotlights on! A clever and enjoyable third entry - nice distortion.

For those of you who don't know this, the hundred watt filament lightbulb is about to be outlawed in Europe - which explains Deborah Morley's monument. It's very neatly achieved: the colouring is just right for the sky, and I like the way we can just see a distorted Nelson through the side of the bulb. Not a very penetrating glow for 100 watts, though! I think we might get a whole Friday Challenge out of this idea...

Brilliant work from katew, swapping Nelson and the phone coffee woman. The size, position, angle and colouring of Nelson are spot on - very neatly achieved! He really needs to do something about those haemorrhoids though.

Striking work from China, who has used the iconic photograph of the Iwo Jima flag raising in silhouette to great effect. Simple, but very effective. And a surreal but intriguing second entry: perhaps the chain should lead to Nelson?

I'm astounded - michael sinclair has followed the brief this week. A fine set of meerkats, although the angle isn't quite right for the setting - we need to be looking up at them rather more. I like the animated close-up, but should they all be moving their heads in unison?

A very neat Shrek statue from BigVern - is that from a 3D model? The tinting is just right; I think a little more stone texture might have helped this one. Great idea!

Spectacular work this week!

Thanks Steve
I have seen the band on several occasions and they do tend to use that laser type light. In fact the image I borrowed had just that. Anyway, glad you liked it. See you on the 23rd.

Re: Challenge 265: Performance space
Thanks Steve - I don't know why but as soon as I saw the image it looked to me like the conning tower/bridge of either a ship, submarine or giving me leeway to use my imagination a spaceship!

I had already been playing with a space scene I had contructed entirely in Photoshop so It just needed a space ship body which I could not find one to fit the perspective so mine is entirely contructed from bits of images and Free Transformed to shape.

Re: Challenge 265: Performance space
Many thanks Steve. I was trying to get the contrast with the extremely bright filament (spots in front of my eyes looking at that)! and the rest of the light. Obviously not right though.

Thanks Steve. I took a lot of trouble to get the colour right, but I have to admit I guessed at the size!

Re: Challenge 265: Performance space
I've been making montages before I knew what the word meant. I was punished as a child for cutting pictures out of a National Geographic magazine. Cut and paste is in my blood, but now it's called copy and move.
Shown is the roofline segments that are stretched and fit to cover the girders. The bottom course of the plinth was copied and stretched for the top course, flipped and stretched for the middle course.
The clone stamp was used for the irregular stuff like the sky and the trees on the left.
Easy, fast and fun!

Thanks for the nice comments Steve.

You are right that Shrek is a 3D model which I coloured, shaded and added some texture. I guess in compressing the image for the web some of the texture detail was lost.

Some interesting feedback on the feedback this week.

Thanks again Steve.

In my mind I wanted to create a conceptually accepted basket for the balloon, so it became a pseudo plinth, e.g .....maybe carbon fibre, not so heavy, and then, which I missed, were the chariot wheels for Boudicca.... etc too late, to much noise by then from me ..... (and again now)

Looking forward to meeting you'se guys hopefully that can make it on the 23rd.

Hi
Thank you Steve.
I was thought many ideas before I did it. But it were not good way of all.
I was think that everywhere if we add the statue on the plinth. So I did it another way. It's too simple.

But, I can't understand more about this word "Nelson"in your comment. Can you explained it.
