Sorry I haven’t been able to come out to play this week. There’s a couple of reasons, the first being a complete lack of inspiration. The other is that I have just had surgery on my left ankle and am currently hobbling around with a plastic boot and crutches 😳 Not sure if I can do something next week. Steve will need to come up with something really tempting 🤣 _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

I like the extended one it blends in beautifully. The very long dissolve in the movie version is very successful. Dissolves that long can get very messy in the middle but this one sustains beautifully. The lamp is a mid twentieth century repro of an art deco lamp by Edgar Brandt. We acquired a matching pair in the late eighties for a few hundred pounds. Now, over thirty years on, their value is such that we couldn't even begin to contemplate buying them! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

First to make a mosaic this week was DavidMac, with a couple of rather fine angels – and a glorious story of architectural restoration. What an amazing jigsaw puzzle! It looks absolutely beautiful. I like the art nouveau door. A glorious second entry, with a full shop interior that’s been immaculately rebuilt – really, this is fabulous work. It must have taken ages. A pulsating backlit name board from lwc, with a set of rather touristy mosaics in the window. I like how you’ve included a faint reflection of the girl looking in, and it makes all the difference. And the car driving past adds interest, especially since you went to the trouble of turning its wheels. A packed window from Ben Boardman, in a much spruced-up shop. There is of course an issue with the right hand wall of the interior, but I’ll be generous and assume a curious shape on the building next door. Very tastefully done. I did enjoy the mosaic entry, not least for its ingenious use of the style at multiple angles: the walking mosaic woman is especially fine. I really like this, Ben. And thanks for showing us the Queensland mural. And a very fine third entry, with some splendid tile art in the windows. I like michael sinclair’s relocation of the shop to downtown La Rochelle, slotting neatly into his post-Christmas renovation. An interesting cast of onlookers, who appear to be held back by an invisible barrier. Clearly computer generated, certainly, but how can we tell that they’re Japanese? I think the flames entry would work better if the fire seemed to come from inside the shop, rather than on the pavement outside. I don’t know how much Ant Snell’s Monsieur Beauplet is charging for his one-hour mosaic filter, but I suspect it’s too much. Unless he only works on seriously large files. Nicely done, but watch the curious angle on the new name sign. It’s all gone a bit retro for tooquilos, whose mosaics tend towards the Assyrian. It’s a beautiful effect, with the new arched door and the mosaic decoration on the wall opposite. An interesting blending effect in the animated version: the fade works well for the window, not so well for the new door. But I like how it pulls back to reveal the Roman pavement at the end, and it’s good to see it in high res too (and now see that it’s actually a Green pavement). Unlike Mariner to be late, but posting this one at 5am shows dedication! I was expecting a refurbishment of the outside of the shop, but instead we get a completely new interior. You’ve given yourself some extraordinarily difficult perspectives to work with here – and they very nearly work: my only real issue is with the arms of the chair, which I imagine should be parallel to the ground and therefore sloping up towards the back from our point of view, rather than down. I see why it took you so long! |

Well thank you Steve. Strangely no. The original image is full of strong parallels so it was quick and easy to plot some vanishing points and draw simple blank rectangles where interior wall, ceiling, open door, etc. should be. With their shape as templates it was surprisingly simple to find ready made gallery wall images that could drop in with a minimum of fuss and tweaking. The hardest part was creating believable window reflections. Fiddly but very rewarding. I enjoyed this one. Thanks! Nice to see an old banner resurrected. I always found the format very hard.
