CS5 Crashes
Hello, Is anyone else finding that PS CS5 crashes everytime you select the type tool, or open a document with type in, on the mac?
I've uninstalled and reinstalled but it's still doing it.
Fortunately I still have CS4 installed and that works fine.

Re: CS5 Crashes
It has happened twice so far to me also Pete while launching the Type Tool. I also have a Mac.

Back in the dark ages of PC days, crashing was a common occurence. i thought it was a thing of the past but yea..experiencing it again with CS5

Re: CS5 Crashes
This is new to me. I haven't had any Type-related crashes with CS5, on either my desktop or MacBook. I can only think it must be a type conflict that's causing the problem. If you can be bothered, try disabling any extra fonts you may have added - you can use FontBook to group them into manageable sets. This may solve the problem.

Re: CS5 Crashes
Well Anna, I guess it's the curse of the early adopters (I hear they've just got windows XP sorted now!)

Big thank you Steve. I disabled all user fonts in font book and now it doesn't crash. Looks like I've got a bit of work organising all my added fonts and trying to pinpoint which ones caused the problems. Thanks again.

Hello, I haven't got CS5 yet, but I remember reading that Snow Leopard was crashing and when a certain font was disabled it stopped. Don't know if it's a coincidence. There were various threads on the Apple forums about it.

Re: CS5 Crashes
I've been using CS5 a lot on both Snow Leopard and Windows7 and it's been as good as gold. Not one crash.

CS4 would crash randomly several times a day.

I am more than please with CS5

Re: CS5 Crashes
I use Mac snow leopard and havent had the problems with the type tool even with extra fonts install
My problem seems to be intermittent and not related really to anything
some times for no reason but after hours of work once i click the save as CS5 will just close GRRR

its not every time its not when i have used a particular action its just random

I now keep a file in my picture folder and keep saving work every 4 layers as PSD files just in case CS5 decides not to save

Its annoying for instance it hasnt happened at all this week, but last week it happened 3 times

Re: CS5 Crashes
I have been getting weird things happening recently.

It's happening on my Mac Pro and also MacBook Pro both running CS5 in 64 bit.

Sometimes dialogue boxes cannot be dismissed. I can press escape, click on OK or CANCEL but it won't go.

While the box is stuck on the screen I am able to click on the tool box and the layer palette and I can change to different tools.

I have to do a force quit to get out of it. If I do the same thing again and get the same dialogue box, when it's working ok, I cannot click on anything outside of the box until I dismiss it.

My left hand is always hovering over the CMD and S keys while I work.

That sounds more like a system graphics issue than a Photoshop problem - as far as Photoshop knows, the dialog has been cleared (or you wouldn't be able to change tools).

Check to see if there's a driver update for you graphics card. Alternatively, try Disk Utility > Repair Permissions, which might just help to sort out the issue.

This particular lockup is 100% repeatable. I am trying to drag a layer from one open image to another. I get a warning about a colour profile mismatch and that is the box (this time) that is sticking. While I can click on other tools and see them highlight I cannot do much else.

I will try your suggestions.
Thanks

Re: CS5 Crashes
Paul,
Silly question but have you downloaded the latest 'patch' for PS? I was having a few problems with 3D before I downloaded it.

Re: CS5 Crashes
OK, this no longer sounds like a system error.

If you always get the crash on colour profile mismatches, do you get the same problem when copying and pasting between the documents? If not, this might be a useful workaround in the meantime.

It sounds to me, though, like a prefs problem. You need to locate the corrupted Photoshop prefs file, which will be a .plist file in your Library, and delete it. Photoshop will rebuild it on launch.

Re: CS5 Crashes
Thanks for the help.

I have not downloaded any patches yet Deborah. I will have a look and see what's available.

I tried copy and paste Steve and that was ok. I got the same warning but it let me click ok and it went away.

I deleted the plist but that didn't help.

This is the box that I get

For now I can use your suggestion of pasting rather than dragging.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard 1.6.5 from 1.6.4 yesterday but that didn't do anything either.

Re: CS5 Crashes
Paul, as a matter of interest can I just check - why are you working in sRGB? It's a narrow and clumsy colour space. Perhaps your Mac is trying to give you a hint!

A good question. I wish I had a good answer.

It's not by choice. I've never paid much attention to colour spaces and use what ever the default happened to be.

I do know that Adobe RGB is better, but I don't know all the ins and outs and feel guilty that I have never spent time learning about that side.

Re: CS5 Crashes
Colour space is a bit of a nightmare, and probably best ignored. But it is worth knowing that sRGB is a space defined by Microsoft and Hewlett Packard, which is intended to make business graphics look better under Windows. It's a very narrow, restrictive colour space, which really has no place in the Photoshop workflow.

I strongly recommend changing your preferences so that new documents open in Adobe RGB. Especially if you're going to be printing your work, Adobe RGB will give very much better results - what you see on screen will be that much closer to what you end up with.

Thanks. If I do nothing else I will do that.

Re: CS5 Crashes
I've experienced some crashes with always the same pattern: When my macbook awakes from sleep mode, puf! Photoshop crashes.

I've sent a lot of error reports to Adobe and Apple and still don't have any clue on that. Well, it's time to be patient, i guess.
