Mac computers
With a birthday imminent I’m thinking to treat myself, and thoughts have turned to Mac computers. Trouble is which one would be most suitable, is it a question of dearest is best? Recommendations welcome. (Should be interesting)

Re: Mac computers
Hello James,
That sounds like an excellent birthday present.
I have a two year old 26" iMac 300GB. I only got that size as at the time it was the only one they did that the could put a bigger graphics card in at the factory. It was expensive but I've never regretted it - Mind you it does rather take over the room! My chap has just bought a 13" laptop which has the same amount (300GB). A great screen.
Does this mean you will have to pay/upgrade all your programmes as well?
And most importantly - when is your birthday?

Re: Mac computers
Hi James. I would think that one of the iMacs would be ideal for you. The 27 inch screen is a beautiful thing both to work with and to look at but the 21.5 inch screen is just as good. Macs are more expensive than PCs but, as with all things in life, you get what you pay for and Macs are quality items. I have yet to meet a Mac convert who regrets the decision and wants to go back to PCs.

The Mac laptops are also worth looking at but for Photoshop work do get a large-ish screen.

The Mac Pro is probably overkill although I wouldn't object if one of my relatives / friends offered to buy me one for my birthday!!!

I may be wrong but I seem to remember that you have a two screen set up with your PCs (don't know why I think that; just some memory from a while back). The iMac (so far as I am aware) doesn't support two screens so that might deter you but the acreage available from a 27 inch screen means that this is not so important.

As Deborah points out one of the problems is going to be the cost of software replacement. I think Adobe has a system whereby you can cross platform their software for a small-ish fee but please don't quote me on that.

I'm sure that, if you get yourself a Mac, you won't regret it.

Gordon

ps .....and the birthday is when?

Hi James. I agree with Gordon, the iMac will probably fit perfect for your needs... but I must say that since I saw it I've fallen in love with the new Macbook Air.... mmmmmmmmm

It's not suitable for photoshop working but is the best netbook I've seen

Re: Mac computers
Thank you each for your replies. Gordon is correct I do have two screens, and would like to keep that set up. The Mac Pro is perhaps a prospect (The price is tooth curling). Ouch; Further research is required. Birthday-18th Jan. Gift wrapt would be nice.

Hello Anna: It’s nice to receive greetings, thank you. You didn’t say which Mac you have? I’m having a good day, it’s sunny, and I am being taken out to dine this evening. Wow!! I’ll enjoy the cake, and perhaps the wine

Re: Mac computers
Gordon! Thank you for the card. I do believe you are tempting me, the Pro does support multiple monitors so that may be the way to go (As I already have those), but the options are open. There is a Macintosh retail outlet in Regent Street, I’ll take a trip and have a peek, and a chat with the experts. The iMac is certainly a great looker, but I refuse to be seduced, at least by a by a computer. As you have pointed out, the software could be the deciding factor. Incidentally, would I get the lower half also?

I hope you had a lovely dinner and birthday celebration James! I have a 27" iMac. I was seduced by the size of the screen..then my love for it was reinforced by its performance and simplicity and of course not having to run Norton every 5 minutes sealed it for me

Re: Mac computers
Happy Birthday for yesterday,
I changed to Mac about 6 month and, and love it. Got an Imac 7 with a 27" screen, but to my surprise I found I still wanted a second screen. No worries at all. Plugged it in and it was away, so much easier than on the PC.
I made sure I got my Mac in time so when I upgraded to CS5, I could upgrade to the Mac version. with lightroom, you can use your registration number on both PC and Mac, not so for CS5.
I bought Mac's Iwork, as as I was trying to save money, (wordprocessor, spreadsheet etc) It's O.K. but when I started doing some big documents with lots of photos, it was just to difficult. I have since bought Office for Mac. I bought a 1 license copy in Singapore, having read somewhere that you could upgrade for more computer for about $30.00. I installed it on my laptop (yes I have also change my laptop to Mac). When I got back home I installed it on my desktop, fully expecting to be asked for some money, but it installed without any problems and accepted my registration.
There are a few programs I miss, but not enough to move 3 feet across the room to use my old PC which my husband has inherited.
The one program I do miss is Photodex's Proshow that I used to make slideshows. IMovie for Mac isn't bad (comes with the computer), but I had so many great backgrounds etc that I can no longer use, and so far I haven't found a way of importing them into the Mac program, but then I'm still learning it.
There is noway I'd go back to PC, good luck and let us know how you get on.
Cheers
Vibeke

Re: Mac computers
Good morning James. I hope you had an excellent birthday.

When I said that I didn't think that iMacs support a second monitor I thought that that must be wrong. I had been thinking that, as there is no 'large' monitor connector then it was not possible. However, there is a mini connector on the back and, as Vibeke confirms, it is possible to attach a second monitor.

I think that I might be getting one myself when I come back from holiday!

Hopefully this info will save you a few bob

Re: Mac computers
Thank you all for your birthday greetings, the day did go well, and the meal was most enjoyable.

With such unanimous praise for the iMac, it would be foolish not to consider it, I'm almost convinced. A visit to a Mac outlet is on the cards.

Gordon, for some reason I did think you were a Mac user.

Re: Mac computers
Hi James, belated birthday greetings.

I can't really enter into the pros and cons of this discussion as I still teach the Microsoft Office programmes and have bought all the latest software compatible with a PC.

However,I recently bought a 13" Macbook Pro laptop and had the retailers partition the hard drive so I have Apple Mac's OS on one part and Window 7 on the other. The Mac laptop is so much more powerful in every respect compared to its Windows based rivals, particulary for graphics programmes. It is also beautifully designed. You could consider this as an option on any Mac you decide to buy if you want to hang onto programmes that are not Mac compatible.

If I could change I would but the cost of all the software changes is a factor plus I am still teaching Windows-based stuff.

Good luck with your choices.

Good morning James,

Yes I do use MACs. I meant that I would get myself a second monitor. Heaven knows where it is going to fit on my desk, though.

James - just checking in from Denver. Happy belated birthday!

If you're planning on going to the Apple Store in Regent Street, drop me a line and I'll see if I can come along to offer suggestions.
