I love photoshop!
let's not take for granted, possibly the single greatest piece of software ever created, and give our thanks to those at Adobe for the ease at which we can translate to screen those pictures from our minds! (without which I would still be using Microsoft paint!)

I would often stay behind after school in the mid 90's to use the powerful 486's in the I.T room, doodling on MS Paint and Corel draw. I still have those old Bmp files on floppy discs, but I don't have a floppy disc drive these days to access them!..

Amen Adobe!

I agree Artwell,

As a physicist and artist I thought I could manipulate them .... time and time very bad results....
Got PS 7. Not very friendly. Very busy And then, had a breakthrough, very quite, cracked it ... of course I know very little still...

I'm amazed how quick it is now.... still make mistakes

You will be going far Artwell... so maybe I will go back to painting, just joking, but please don't leave me/us behind, I have the Jota even though Hayabusa faster, but I know I will never lack of vision

Go for it "mate" as Doug would say ??? (Doug, just like the conversations )

Sorry if that is a bit weird to some. Just forget my comment. The places I've lived in shift my mind, but not as much as others .....

Jota are you still using PS 7? I think that was the version I started on in 2004/5 maybe time for an upgrade? Try adobes free 30day trials for CS.

Recently I was on a friends computer, which didn't have photoshop installed, I needed to resize and colour alter a photo but was clueless on how to do it!, something that could have been done in seconds with photoshop turned into a frustrating chore!

Maybe you should upload some of your paintings for us all to see

Re: I love photoshop!
I've been taking pictures since the age of 10, when my mum let me use her old Finetta 35mm camera and results were rather hit and miss. Some of those old prints have been scanned and given new life, thanks to PS. This just wouldn't have been possible back in the day when I took the images. Even today, with modern Canon kit, PS proves invaluable and I could not live without it.

I recall buying my fist digital photo magazine in early 2004 and being blown away by cloning and healing. I only had Elements 2 at the time, because it came with the Canon 10D, but later progressed to CS. I'm not sure how far it will go, or what Adobe will think of next, but even as it stands PS is undoubtedly the best piece of software I've used.

The first time I opened the interface my first reaction was that this would be impossible to learn and master. Digital Photo mag was invaluable in teaching me the basics from a photographers perspective, but then I found Steve book (CS2) in PC World and that undoubtedly took my PS skills to another level. I now look at tutorials online and in magazines and think 'why the hell are you going it like that!'

The only thing that PS cannot do for me is create artistic ability. I see work which makes me so envious and I know I'll never have the talent to create it. Therefore, I stick to what I can do and thank Steve for this wonderful forum and for the friends here, which make it such fun.

Nick

Re: I love photoshop!
I'm with you on that Nick, Ive always doodled but cannot paint or draw well, I tried a graphics tablet but it didn't work for me. Some people can create amazing art with a drawing tablet.

But I would love to try this out http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/wacom-cintiq-24hd-hands-on-video/

This time last year I'd never used dodge and burn, layer masks or curves. Purchased 100% photoshop last Christmas and was amazed at what can be created just in photoshop without any other sources.

Artwel,

>Jota are you still using PS 7?

No I use CS5, and some of the versions in-between IMHO PS7 established and refined most of the important algorithms and features, but OMG the later versions really make it faster for me (work flow) and love CS5. Several here still use PS7, and you can see great results. The algorithms and features are very well defined IMHO. I would not really like to go back though, maybe I am lazy, but the Warp tools are priceless and really love smart objects and adjustment layers that are open for non-destructive changes afterwards....... etc

Nick,

Thanks for sharing. Agree Steve gives us inspiration, a weekly challenge gets me off the bench (whatever that means) and your work is great. I can't stop photography either, and at least now I don't have to worry about random Photo Shops developing my pictures .....

I've seen your photographs, they are great when you share with us.

I'm still learning, and maybe forgetting.

I still love art like a passion , same as photography and PS of course. Art seems to be in my blood, does not mean I am any good, but the process is important for all of us I think. I see lots of talent and great entries here

You should get yourself a tablet - the Wacom bamboo is cheap and very good - and just stick with it. Everyone who gets a tablet hates it for the first week or two, and then it just clicks. Seriously, with your Photoshop skills you'll be amazed at the difference a tablet can make.

I reviewed the Cintiq for MacUser magazine a couple of months ago. A very nice piece of kit - but your hand gets in the way!

Glad you've found 100% Photoshop useful. Take a look at How to Cheat in a book shop sometime, you might find it fills in the gaps.

Re: I love photoshop!
Thanks Steve. So you wouldn't recommend the Cintiq? I like the idea of drawing directly onto the screen ,but for the price it would need to work perfectly! I've tried a standard tablet but find I'm drawing off the edge of it or finding it hard to accurately place the pen where I need it!, I guess it just practice, plus my tablet was A5 and £40 from Argos!

Ideally a dual touchscreen laptop would be good, rather than having to remember all those shortcuts.. And is it just me or did all the shortcuts change letters between CS3 and CS5!?..

Re: I love photoshop!
Artwel, I can say that using a tablet has helped me greatly with getting closer to what I want to achieve in PS. For accurate detailing and control it cannot be beaten and pressure sensitivity is very useful.

I started out with a cheap no-name A6 tablet from Argos and it was useless compared with the Wacom Bamboo I now use. At first using the Bamboo was frustrating and I was going to give up with it but I kept going and now cannot imagine using PS without it.

I do not know about the Cintiq other than that it looks very impressive and costs a fortune. Two advanced PS users who use a Cintiq are Bert Monroy and Pete Collins. Bert has a series of tutorial videos called Pixel Perfect which were run on Revision3.com and he is an amazing artist. Pete is a new teacher at NAPP (which is subscriber only) but also appears on recent editions of Photoshopusertv. Try googling either and watch them using the Cintiq.

Nearly Christmas now, hope you have a happy one.

Cheers Vern
