help me edit this photo :)
Hello all,

I am fairly new to PS but have been using other grahics programs for years and want to learn PS becasue it is way more powerful. I have CS on my machine and have been reading Steve's Book, which by the way is soo cool for the beginner. I am wanting to edit the photo below for a video and remove the white halter on the horse so I can crop just his head from the picture.

Any suggestion on how to do this or what tools to use ?

Thanx in advance

Welcome Ryan (this could get confusing, there's another Ryan on the board). What you need are the clone and healing brushes, they should make light work of this image.

You might also want to place a brightness adjustment layer above the image and increase the brightness to see the darker parts of the image. You can then remove it once you've finished.

Thanx Trinity

I will use Ryan L from hear on out

I am sooo green to all this layer stuff but I suppose its the same as webpage layers etc.. Im sure I can get the hang if it. I need to install the CD that came with the book and work thru some of the examples. I just happen to have a deadline for this coming weekend to put a DVD together for my horse

I appreciate the quick response

I'd begin by brightening up the horse - it's a little dark, and it's hard to see what's going on here. Since you have CS, use the Shadow/Highlight adjustment to bring some of the detail out of those shadows. (Remember, you can always darken it again later.)

This is going to be a tricky job, however you approach it. Stick with the cloning tool - I wouldn't recommend the Healing brush on a job as fiddly as this - and take it in small chunks. The hard part will be avoiding a repeating tile pattern, especially on the horse's nose: keep sampling different areas with the Cloning tool, and try to bear in mind what the horse's musculature looks like.

You should be able to end up with something like this with little difficulty.

Welcome to the board, by the way

Steve

The adjustment layer is purely an aid to the process. Layers are just like pieces of celluloid stacked on top of one another, very useful.

Wow,

You guys are helping sooo much. CS is like having a Ferrari in the gargae and not knowing how to drive

That looks awesome Steve - Thanx

Trinity - I now know how to add a new layer
adjustment layer are cool - I like this becasue you can delete the layer and not have to back all the way out to remove something.
I feel like I have been living in a cave

So , Is there a clone tool or just the stamp ? Cant seem to find it

The clone tool/stamp/brush (I think at one point, it was called the Rubber Stamp) is accessed by pressing 's', the healing brush is accessed by pressing 'j'.

OK I'm having a very boring week, so I am jumping at every opportunity to play with pictures. Here's my pennies worth. Using the same technique as Trinity and Steve say, except I did use the smudge tool to give the impression of the muscle tone to the cloned parts, and also added a little dot to the eye (I thought it bought the horse "alive" somehow, I may be wrong?).
At this rate I'm gonna be begging you Steve for a Wednesday challenge... I hate wet weather!

Sheesh.. thats one huge image, how did you manage to post it on here. I always spend about 3hrs sizing mine to fit withint the 100k limit. Tell me your secret... please!
You are very lucky to have a black horse to work on, just the thought of Piebald brings tears to my eyes. He's a fine looking horse too

Thanx Tabitha,

I just did a save for web from the menu and just kept cranking it down to under 100k

Hendrik is our new Friesian Stallion and just turned 2
He is such a goof ball but loves people. Although he is not very photogenic. He always turns his eyes back instead of pointing them stright ahead
