Upgrading your Wacom tablet and Photoshop for Yosemite
Yesterday I took the plunge and upgraded to Yosemite.

I won’t bore with you general impressions but here is information that impacts directly on Photoshop and Wacom tablets.

The Wacom information is particularly important as Yosemite will remove your Wacom preference pane.

This information applies to CS5X and CS6X (I am sure that what goes for CS6X will go for CC). I can't speak for earlier versions.

CS5

I keep an old copy of CS 5 on my machine set to run in 32 bit mode so as to preserve some plugins that won’t run under 64 bit.

When you start CS5 for the first time you will get a message saying you need to install some Java elements no longer included in Yosemite. Just follow the “More Information” instructions in the on screen dialogue to go to the Apple download for this. Download and run the installer. CS5 will then run fine.

CS6

CS6 runs fine as it is.

Wacom Tablets

When you upgrade to Yosemite it will move the Wacom Preference Pane to a folder in your root directory called incompatible software. It will no longer appear in the System Preferences. Your tablet may or may not work ........

DON’T PANIC!!

This is what you do to get it back and to get your tablet running happily under Yosemite. This worked perfectly for both my Intuos Pro on my Mac Pro and my early model Bamboo on my Mac Book Pro.

1) In Finder go to Applications and open the folder named Wacom Tablet. In this folder run Wacom Tablet Utility.app. In the dialogue box that appears click the centre button in the top row to backup your existing tablet preferences. (I did this to the desktop as it is only a temporary measure).

2) Now click the lower button on the left to remove the Wacom drivers, preferences and utilities entirely. The Wacom folder will disappear from Applications.

3) Go Here and download the latest driver for your particular tablet. (The drivers don’t list list compatibility with 10.10 yet. Download the one marked 10.7 - 10.9.)

4) Once this is download restart your computer to get a nice clean start.

5) Install the new driver. You will now hava functional preference pane in System Preferences.

6) Go to wherever you stored the preferences backup and double click it. This will restore your settings. You can delete the backup or move it to a safe place.

7) Although it's not necessary I would recommend that you go to the Incompatible Software folder in your root directory and delete the old preference pane from it.

Enjoy your tablet as before ……..

A couple of other things worth mentioning about Yosemite. The New OS8 style interface can be quite hard to read if, like me, your eyesight is not what it once was. You can make it much more readable by going to System Preferences > Accessibility and switching on Increase Contrast (this will also switch off transparency).

If you like using Photoshops dark interfaces then in System Preferences>General switch on Use Dark Menu Bar and Dock. This this will make all the drop down menus and the menu bar black with white type.

Enjoy an all dark interface ………. sexy .....

Good tips David. I installed Yosemite a couple of days ago and the first thing it said to me was that my Wacom wouldn't work. Haven't had time to update the drivers yet.

I also keep CS5 available but hadn't found out about the issue you mention.

Thank you for this David. I was just going to post a question about CS5 and Yosemite, but I think you already answered my questions. I tried calling Adobe, but I think I have a better chance of speaking to the President of the U.S. Apparently Adobe only will allow you to talk to one of their precious tech people if you are handing them money.

I think that's becoming more common generally nowadays .......

Thanks David,
I did get the message about the Wacom on my laptop, where I haven't used the tablet, My iMac didn't give me a message, and the tablet has been working fine.
Still I will follow your directions.

Before you do check System Preferences and see if your Tablet Preferences are still there. If they are and they work then 'don't shake the boat' is probably the best policy. If you find the preference pane is gone then you need to follow what I suggest.

I found my tablet worked to my personal settings exactly as programmed by me before the update. But the preference pane had gone from system preferences so I couldn't modify my personal settings any longer if I needed to.

Good luck.

Re: Upgrading your Wacom tablet and Photoshop for Yosemite
I have just upgraded to Yosemite. Again I got the message about my Wacom. I have never bothered to set up my preferences for it.
The tablet is still working, so should I follow your instructions? Does it interfere with anything?
I have now had CC2014 and CC not responding when I have tried to do some 3D but it may have been too complicated for it.
I ran Network Diagnostics, turned the computer off, disconnected the Wacom and started the computer again. Disconnecting the Wacom made no difference to the CC2014 problem.

If you have never set up any tablet preferences and it works then "if it ain't broke don't fix it" may be the simplest course. However it looks that may no longer be case for you.

I find all 3D incredibly slow and unresponsive in PS so I won't comment any further on that particular problem. I quite simply don't use it. I find dedicated 3D modellers and renderers, and dedicated video editors far better for their particular functions than PS's rather uncomfortable "bolt on", "one stop shop for all", attempts to do the same.

More to the point than me having my little moan is that Wacom now offer a fully Yosemite compatible driver.

I would suggest you simply uninstall your existing driver using the Wacom uninstaller and install the new one. It can't do any harm.

Thanks David,
However my tablet was so old that Wacom no longer did the drivers, so invested in an Intuos pen and touch, cheap and nicer to use, so off we go...
