changing colour
Fairlyy basic one this - but I've forgotten how to do it.

I've got some black type (rasterised) which I want to change to white (255,255,255).
What is the proper way to achieve these exact values?

Cheers
Chris

Re: changing colour
Have you tried (Ctrl + I) to invert? This will turn your text to white.

Re: changing colour
Hi Luis
I went to replace colour, selected the type and clicked the result box.
However, despite selecting white it only went to cool grey, so I boosted the lightness slider until I got white.

I got the result, but this can't be the proper way to do it?

Re: changing colour
Luis is right, just make sure that your rastorized text layer is active and press Ctrl-i. You can check the colour in the info palette with the eye dropper.

Re: changing colour
Hi Chris,

Does the (Ctrl I) open the Replace Color dialog? Is this something different in the latest version of Photoshop?. I'm using 7.0

If the rasterised text is on its own layer, Try one of the following if (Ctrl I) does not work:

  • Ctrl click on the rasterised layer to bring up the selection around the text. Create a new layer and fill in that layer with white.
  • Use the Levels and adjust the Output Levels

Re: changing colour
Hi Luis and Rufus
I don't like using fill because it increases the area of the selection every time you use it. When you do this on logos it eventually fills them in, which is why I was hoping to use another method.
Luis - I can create white with your method. What do I do if I want another colour, say yellow?

Re: changing colour
Use an Adjustment Color Layer and group that with the text layer and use any color you want. I just remembered about the adjustment layer and group layer. (NOTE : Grouping layers might be call something else which I don't know the name for it. This is what is called in PS 7) This should also solve your original problem.

Re: changing colour
The text is a rasterised layer - in effect a normal layer.
What do you think is the simplest way to change the "text" from black to say, pure red?

Chris

One last idea i can think of for changing color of a rasterized text. If the text is on a transparent layer, use a Layer Style: Color Overlay.

Re: changing colour
Chris, an easy way to change the text colour is to add a hue saturation layer above the text layer, tick colorize and move the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders to suit.

Re: changing colour
Chris,
Select the type layer (Cmd Click) then click on the foreground colour. Type in the colour value you want (R=255, G=255, G=255) then just hit Alt-Backspace.

Re: changing colour
Hi Gordon
I want to do this without using fill, as I've discovered that fill expeands a selection with repeated use.
The best method seems to be replace colour.

Re: changing colour
Changing color won't work well with black or white as there is no color.

You can change to Lab color and try that, or can use the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer by checking the Colorize box, adjusting Hue and Saturation as desired, and setting the Lightness slider to a positive value for black areas as Rufus suggested.

Re: changing colour
Hi Guys
Wow, this is a lengthy debate!

I think Luis is right on the money with his clipping layer approach.

Once the text is on a transparent layer, set up a solid colour, or gradient, or pattern layer, or whatever you want for that matter and then clip it to the text later. With solid colour, double click on the thumbnail and this will bring up the picker. Just click around until you find the colour you like, or type in values.

The beauty of this method is that you can keep on adjusting the colour time and time again. I hope the screenshot helps

Re: changing colour
Surely the simplest way is to press D to set the colours to default black and white, then ctrl shift backspace to fill with the background colour? (Holding Shift preserves the transparency of the layer.)

Re: changing colour
Agree Steve

The suggestion above was made to provide flexibility for colour choice. I would suggest the simplest way, if you merely want to change black to white is to select CTRL+I, as you would to invert a mask. I tried this after making the post, just to make sure and it worked fine.

Chris, I was slightly confused by your comment above - "I don't like using fill because it increases the area of the selection every time you use it". I have never experienced this and wonder whether the text has been feathered in any way?

Re: changing colour
Steve - what does layer transparency achieve?

Nick -
Feathered - ooh I hadn't thought of that.
I don't think it was feathered - i noticed the problem because I usually change the colour of our theatre logo to match the theme of a new poster. When it printed, a lot of the fine detail had been lost.

I'll check this out.

Re: changing colour
Hi Chris

When you rasterise text, the letters will appear on a blank layer. New layers are normally transparent until you fill them with something. If you were to paint or fill on the layer with the text, you would not only paint over the text, but also over the transparent area of the layer. I have never used the shortcut described by Steve, but this will effectively lock the transparent area of the layer and protect it. The same can be achieved by checking the Lock Layer icon in the layers pallette.

With your logo, I would suggest you save an original as a TIFF file, i.e. uncompressed and then use a fresh copy every time you design a new poster. Saving JPEG repeatedly may be the reason for the loss in quality.

If you just use opt/alt and backspace to fill with the foreground colour (or command/ctrl and backspace for the background colour) it will fill the entire canvas. As Nick explains, holding Shift as well prevents the fill operation from affecting pixels that aren't already present on the layer - in other words, transparent areas of the layer will remain transparent.

It's the same as locking the layer transparency first in the Layers palette, but quicker. And you know how much I like my time savers!

Can you tell me what is the simplest, most precise way to change the colour of a rasterised type layer. Let's say I want to change it from white to pure red?

Cheers
