Thank you for the response, Bob. I'll attempt the conversion. If this doesn't work... I'll have to settle with what I have and ....zzzz zzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Monitor calibration and color management workflow are two big stumbling blocks for Photoshop newbies. Once you get these down though, you'll be able to achieve consistant predictable results.

I'd recommend reading the color management articles on Ian Lyon's excellant web site. http://www.computer-darkroom.com/home.htm

I hope your image finally behaved the way you wanted it to.

The image looked fine to me, tank - I really think this is a monitor problem.

Steve,

The images look fine to me also. It's entirely possible that his monitor calibration still isn't spot on. But, I think there is something going on here besides the monitor calibration. Chris is concerned with the proof print he's getting from the image downloaded from his Yahoo account.

I don't know how he's printing that image, but it's evidently not with Photoshop. He says it prints well from Photoshop, but horribly from the other application. I'm assuming it's the same computer and printer. Since the image he's printing has an embedded Adobe RGB profile, I would expect that the print could be desaturated by comparison. But, certainly not produce the results he is describing. Something isn't right.

Without knowing what his Photoshop settings are and what his printer driver settings are, it is difficult to know what is going on. Following Ian Lyon's articles should help him sort that out.

Since the image looks ok, he's probably safe sending the image to his editor. I'd still recommend sending an sRGB version since I don't know what the receiving party is expecting or is capable of processing. I hope he didn't tweak the image to make it print out ok on that bum printer setup.

Chris,

Besides the monitor calibration with Adobe Gamma, you have an issue with the image color space. I looked at the two samples you provided (Original.jpg and Retouched.jpg) and here's what I found.

Original.jpg is untagged. That is, no color management profile is embedded in it. These types of files are considered to use the sRGB color space by implication.

Retouched.jpg has an embedded Adobe RGB profile. Adobe RGB is not the same as sRGB and such an image will appear to have less saturation and contrast when viewed in an application that is not color managed.

Since they are asking for a jpg, they will probably be expecting either an untagged image or one with an embedded sRGB profile. Use the convert command in Photoshop to convert from the Adobe RGB color space to the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color space and then save the image.

Dang!.... I was that tired last night/this morning lol..... I forgot to say about wut Bob said...... the color space settings is under the Edit menu.... go to Edit>Color Settings.... when the box comes up..... under the part that says 'RGB' in the 'Working Spaces' section....is a drop down list.... have a look... there should be one in there with the color setting you saved yours to.... like.. 'tanks color'.... pick that.... I've put up a pic of how mine is laid out.....

After the conversion, color management, and final retouch of the photo, I received the proof for print from the editor. The colors came out accurately, and everything is wonderful. Thank you everyone for all your helpful advice. I very much appreciated your input.

Dalton, after I darkened the windows...the broker wanted me to change them back. I liked them better after I went with your suggestion. Oh well. Nature of the beast, I guess.

Attached is the final proof. Just thought that those who posted would be interested to see how it turned out. I hope that this isn't against the rules.

Thank you all,

Chris

Tank a site that may be of interest to you is www.radiantvista.com

There are some terrific tutorials on fixing up images and a new one was just added talking about adjustment layers. (in the tutorials sections). I find I watch a couple daily critiques each day in the hope it will help train my eye to take better photography.

tank. there's no comparison when looking at images on a website. All colour profiles are discarded by the browser (IE, at least) and are rendered in sRGB.

It looks perfectly OK here. Macs tend to be a bit lighter than windows PCs

Re: Big Problem...well... ..newbie problem
Thanks Dalton. Big breath of relief when I received the final proof and it printed ok.

Thanks for the advice David, I was unaware that my IE was playing tricks on me... not fun at 2:00 in the morning!

I'll check out the website Pauline. I'm currently working on another project, but I'll look at it this evening. Took a break to check out this site again.

Thanks for the suggestions Bob. I had no idea that this kind of thing could be so complicated! I'll be sure to check out Ian's website. You and Dalton were a tremendous help last night. Thank you both.

Regards,
Chris
