What are the layer styles? Is one of them colour overlay? If it is then you cannot brighten that with an adjustment layer because it's not really part of the layer.

The layer effects are:
Bevel and emboss
Satin
Gradient overlay

I brightened the logo (eventually) using contours in the layer effects menu.

If anyone knows of another way, please let me know.

Hi Chris,

Here is an example that I did for you. I started with the black circle, added the layer effects that you listed, and then brightened it by adding a levels adjustment layer on the stack above the layer. Is this what you are looking for?

Dave.

I think that works in a situation where you have just one layer to consider however, in the poster designed by Chris the logo will only be one element. Therefore, by adding curves or levels above the logo will affect all of the image. Looking at your example, I clipped Levels to the rasterised text and the adjustment I made disappeared.

I tried the following to see what would happen.

A shape was selected from a white background and placed onto a new layer. A gradient adjustment layer, which would serve much the same purpose as a layer style, was clipped to the shape. The bevel sits as a layer style as normal. I then applied a levels adjustment layer above the shape and nothing happened. However, when I moved levels to the top of the stack, it then affected the lightness of the gradient below. See screenshot attached.

This mix and match approach could be a possible solution for Chris when working on future projects. However, it does not address the issue I described in my previous entry, i.e. that the effects sometimes change character when you flatten the image or save the file.

Come home soon Steve!!

We're not getting any further forward with this are we!?
Also we're discovering complicated solutions for what should be a simple procedure.

I think the answer could lie in the fact that the blending mode for gradient within layer styles is set to normal by default, so any adjustment you make will not show.

This may work

- Create a shape / logo and fill with 50% grey
- add Gradient layer style
- change the blend to multiply or other and adjust opacity to suit.
- Add levels / curves adj layer and clip to shape layer.

Why not post a highly reduced in size PSD so people can see if there is something that's been overlooked?

Thanks Nick, I'll give that a try.
Paul - there's a screen shot on page one showing the layers.

OK Chris - let me know if it worked and produced the desired result.

Re: how do I lighten layer with layer effects?
Yes it is true, that adding a levels adjustment will affect all layers below the levels layer. But, you can restrict it to just the object to be adjusted by using a mask. Just select the layer, invert the selection, and fill the mask on the levels adjust layer with black. I just tried it with a back ground image, and it works fine.

See Below, the first is before levels adjust, and the second is after. The blue shape is not adjusted.

Another thing that might do what you want, convert the layer to smart filters.

I also tried flattening the image, and saving the image, with no problem. Perhaps I still don't understand the problem?

Unfortunately I cannot see your image Dave, but I think the problem highlighted by Chris can be solved by altering the blend modes of the styles he's using. The other issue does not always happen, i.e. to all styles, but I have encountered problems, particularly when using textures.
