Re: Bridge perspective
Also, the carpet reflection has to correspond to the water reflection shades. The carpet reflection spans an area in the water that has a light area reflecting the sky, and a dark area that reflects the trees. The carpet reflection should do the same to add realilty.

Re: Bridge perspective
Hi!
I'm a new member here, only just started with the book so I'm no Photoshop expert (eventhough I have used it a little bit before..)
I just happened to stumble upon this thread now, and this last comment sort of interests me, mostly 'cuz I think it's wrong..
Why should the carpet reflection correspond to the "water reflection shades"? The difference in reflected illumination is due to the fact that in the bright parts we can see the sky (as you yourself point out), but if we instead have a reflection of the carpet then that isn't valid anymore. Nor could we say for sure that any (underside) part of the carpet would recieve more illumination reflected off the water than any other, if that is your point. From point of view of the carpet (and the assumption that we are more or less dealing only with ambient light, since we can't make out where the sun is) the trees to the right would obscure some of the sky, but more interesting is what is behind the camera(wo)man... But because of the ripples (the tiniest would due) this effect would be so small as to never be noticeable.
Or am I missing something???
Also, the the carpet reflection seems to be a little too far out for me, since we see the water at quite an oblique angle shouldn't it appear - just a little bit - closer to the shoreline? And, finally, the right end corner of the reflection does a 'tip' thing (up or down depending on how you see it) which the original doesn't do...

Please correct me if I'm wrong it's the only way I can learn
Cheers

Re: Bridge perspective
Welcome to the forum, Tomas. You make several good points here.

The reflection of the carpet should be darker than the top for two reasons. First, because water is not a perfectly reflective surface, so some of the light is absorbed. This is what I meant by comparing the shades of the reflected trees: it gives an indication of how much light is lost.

But the reflection is also darker because it's showing the underside of the carpet, which is lit only by reflected light - which is itself less strong, for the same reason given above. So overall, the reflected carpet should be doubly darker than the view of the top side.

You're correct about the position of the carpet reflection, however. It needs to be the same distance below the surface as the original is above it. But I didn't want to overload my comments with criticism!

Keep pointing out these observations, they're good for all of us.
