How do I creat a new layer beneath the basic lettering. As needed for step one. THANKS |

I assume that you are starting from scratch and not using the file on the CD, which already has the merged layer set. To create a layer beneath the currently active layer, hold Control and click the new layer icon in the layer palette. There are so many strange little modifiers in PS, that one is great if you're writing tutorials, it saves a couple of sentences explaining about dragging the layer icon, etc.  _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

I'd just do ctrl-N, D, ctrl-delete, ctrl-left bracket (if I was using a PC, that is). But then I always prefer keyboard shortcuts to mouse movements! |

Curious, isn't it - they invent the mouse/gui to ease our lives, then create keyboards and software with shortcuts to do everything we used to do with the mouse _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Well I realise that Ctrl-N will create a new layer, D will set the Foreground & Background colours to default, Ctrl-Delete will fill the layer with the background colour but what does Ctrl-Left Bracket do? CTRL+Left (square) Bracket moves the current layer down the stack, Right does the opposite. Using Alt instead, moves the layer focus. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

But surely after using Ctrl-N which creates a new document (sorry I said layer before) then the use of Ctrl+left bracket has no function as there is only the one layer. Ah I just realised Steve meant Shift+Ctrl+N to create a new layer. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Technically, no but given the context of the thread, I think Steve accidentally omitted Shift from the combination. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Well I'm going to have to start learning some of these more obscure shortcut combinations because all I've tended to do is to click the "create new layer" icon and use the mouse to drag it behind the active layer and click Edit/Fill (white) (seems less complicated than a battery of key combos that most of the time I can't remember or would pyhiscally take longer to do) Becky _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Shortcuts don't suit everyone. Personally, I love them and will always learn them in preference to using the mouse: I also create loads of Actions, and use QuicKeys to create shortcuts that Actions can't handle. I find it makes me much faster, which means I can meet my deadlines! |

I'm a bit old-skool(sic) too, I use the keyboard much more in windows and applications than I do the mouse, as Steve says, it's a lot quicker. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Well I'm not sure about 'a lot' quicker I'm no slow-coach in getting images turned around. Shortcuts are handy to know but the mouse can be just as handy. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Depends on the circumstances, I'd say. For example, I use QuicKeys to write shortcuts for this forum. When I press Control-B, for instance, QK types [ b ] [ / b ] back back back back. A far quicker way of putting someone's name into Bold! Same goes for attaching URLs, images and so on. In Photoshop, I use Control-F to trigger a 'sticky' key for opening filters: this waits for another keypress, such as U for Unsharp Mask, G for Gaussian Blur, P for Plastic Wrap, and so on. Becky, no-one's accusing you of being a slouch! As I say, keyboard shortcuts don't suit everyone! |
