Simple problem...well..for you!
Yet another newbie problem...

I have a paragraph of text and a "S" shaped layer. I want to get the left margin of the text to fit close to the right side of the S shape that I created with the pen tool. How do I do that!?!?! I've tried everything I can think of!

Thanks,

Chris

Do you mean you want the text to follow the curve of the S shape?

no, the left margin of the text box needs to follow the curve on the right side of the s shape layer.

What you're after is a simple text wrap operation.

Amazingly, Photoshop doesn't offer this feature - although it's found in Quark XPress, InDesign, Illustrator, Freehand and many other applications.

If you have access to any of those, then you can craete the text wrap there, export it as an EPS file and import it into Photoshop. If you don't have those, then I'm afraid you're going to have to do it laboriously - adding spaces, one line at a time, to follow the shape. If you do use this method, make sure you spell check and edit the text first! Making corrections later will be a nightmare!

Thanks for the suggestion, I have Illustrator and Indesign. I'll try using those to complete the task.

Thanks again.

If you have Illustrator, then it's easy: draw your S shape, set it up next to the text, and create a text wrap. Then copy it, and place it into Photoshop. If you have CS2, you can place it as a Smart Object (the default option). What's good about this is that you can edit the text in Illustrator later, and it will automatically update itself in PS. Clever, eh?

Re: Simple problem...well..for you!
Is there a shortcut key to quickly select a layer of text and edit the content within? I'm having trouble when I place the Text tool (T) over my layer, it creates a layer on top of the text that I want to edit. After about the 30th try of moving the text and tinkering in a hopeless attempt at selecting it and editing.. ...none worked...

To edit a text layer, double-click its thumbnail in the layer palette.

It's funny how some things stick in your mind.
I was looking at the way that type followed custom shapes and I realized that this particular problem from a while back could be solved by adapting the technique.

Here's how I did it.
Draw a path with the Pen tool outlining the shape of the text box as shown in the upper picture.
With the path still active, select the Text tool and click anywhere inside the text box.
Type away, the text will be constrained by the box and as this is live text the font and size can be changed to suit.

Rufus,

How do you convert the shape made with the pen tool into a text box? Per your directions, when I make the shape with the pen tool and click on the text tool, Photoshop creates a text layer and the shape doesn't convert into a text box.? The shape remains on its own layer.

I'm sure the answer is right in front of me, though.

Thanks,
Chris

Can you reveal how you figured it out? Preferably in simple step-by-step directions as I've tried the tip above but, like you, Photoshop keeps creating a new text layer. I've tried drawing the shape with/without a fill, and edited it umpteen times with the pen tool, path selection tool, etc. But everytime I try to insert text...bang...up it pops on a new layer.

When you create your new path, click inside of the path you created. A new text layer will pop up, but will be constrained inside of the path.

Thanks for the reply. I must be doing something fundamentally wrong with PS7 though. I used the pen tool to create a path that encompassed the white area to the left of your first image. However the text doesn't seem to be constrained at all as it's always right-justified no matter where I click.

You're probably not leaving the path still active.

"With the path still active"

Therein lies the problem. I've tried it with a closed path, an open path, editing the path with the direct selection tool and the path selection tool, editing the nodes with the convert point tool, clicking the path in the path palette. I've also tried right-clicking the path and turning it into a selection, I've seen marching ants all over the place and I've drawn so many versions of that shape that I'm in danger of imagining it in my sleep.

And yet, no matter what I do, as soon as I click anywhere on the canvas (inside or outside the path, on the edge of the path, or merely shutting my eyes and stabbing away at random with my mouse) any text I enter always stays right-justified.

The mystifying part is that I'm quite familiar with using pen tools, i.e. drawing/altering bezier curves, from CorelDraw and Flash. Maybe the text alignment just can't be done in PS7.

I appreciate the help though.
