					Layer Masks: Intersections P. 52 & 53
Hi: Same problem as last time. Clicking on the layer did not make the extra box for the paintbrush/circle appear. I finally was able to achieve the effect, but when I attempted to paint the thumb black, it came out thumb colored - but it worked. What is wrong? |

Maybe post a screenshot up. It may be easier to see what's going wrong. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Can you tell me how to do a screen shot? I am not familiar with that. |

If you're using Windows: Press the Print Screen key. Open a new document in Photoshop (it will automatically be set to the right dimensions) and paste the saved screen in. On the Mac: Press Cmd+Shift+3. It'll save a screenshot to your home folder. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

					Re: Layer Masks: Intersections P. 52 & 53
When I try to paint the thumb black, it becomes clear. I will try to send a picture of my desk top that shows I have no extra box in layers next to the "eye" that shows a paint brush. I use PhotoshopCS2 on a Mac. Oops! I do not know how to get the photo of my desktop into this e-mail. Any suggestions? |

I tried sending the desktop phot as an attachment, but it said the file was too large to send. |

You need to crop it to just show the layer palette as that is the problem.

That looks right to me: painting on the layer mask for the Psion hides it, so the thumb shows through. What problem do you have here? |

On the layers palette, I never show the little box with the "o" or the "paint brush" which in the book's pictures is between the "eye"symbol and each layer box. why am I not showing this as in the book? Do you mean that when as in direction 3, page 52, when I paint with black, I should not actually "see" black", but the thumb becming clear? Thanks for your patience. Martha |

Martha, In CS2 the paint brush/mask symbol has been removed. Instead, the currently active object has brackets around it; as shown in your screenshot, the mask is the currently active part of the layer. When you create a mask, its default state is white (Reveal All). This means that nothing is initially hidden. Painting in black will hide the content in that area.
