Rust, grime and decay
I am having trouble getting the same results Steve gets in chapter 10. I am using a similar file (black on white), but at almost every step I have a question. I have only one layer in this project. Here goes...
1. Creating an Alpha
I have been selecting the black and creating an alpha from the selection.
2. Blur Artwork
Does this mean that I should click back onto the layers section and add a Gaussian, or some such blur to the actual artwork layer?
3. Lighting Effects
What do I have selected now when I go to lighting effects? The layer with the artwork, or the alpha? I'm guessing the layer with my art, but it's not giving me the effect produced in step 2 in the book. That cool look like metal had been pounded from the back.

You should be working on the Alpha channel when you blur it. Go back to the standard layer to apply the Lighting Effects filter. Select the Alpha Channel as the texture layer. If the effect looks like it's facing inward, rather than outward, check or uncheck the White is High checkbox.

There is a video showing this technique on the CD with the latest book if you're still having problems.

Re: Rust, grime and decay
Thanks for the help, but I'm still having problems. Unfortunately, I have the third edition and there isn't any help for this tutorial on my disc. When I place the Lighting Effects on the layer, it does make the text look raised, but the harsh black type still stays painted over the top. Steve's example makes the raised part lighter and the border dark. I have the opposite effect and it looks terrible. I continued on in the tutorial and came across another problem. When I added noise to the alpha, it made no difference to the appearance of my artwork layer. I feel like I'm missing something in the early steps to make these problems pop up later.

When you apply the Lighting Effects filter, you need to apply it to a new, blank layer - not the one containing your artwork! Then all should be fine.
