Chris, Look at this; I made 2 overlapping selections using the Lasso tool and deleted the black area. The one one the left is with the anti-alias checked and the one on the right is without the anti-alias checked

Yeah it soften the edge to make it look smoother and less jagged. |

well to add on from maiden's reply what it does is produce smooth-edges by partially filling the edge pixels. (if that makes a little more sense) As a result, the edges blend into the background. |
