A really easy question
Sorry but I am new to CS3 and have a really simple question.....

I am trying to run through the fundamentals P4 and all is fine until I try and move a selection (point 7). I have tried selecting the move tool both by using the Apple key and also using the move tool itself but whenever I drag and drop I only get the selected region and not its contents. Has anyone got any ideas. I am hoping this is not a bug from leopard???

Thanks

Richard

Hi Richard,

Cmd-Alt-drag will create a copy of the selected area and move it to another point ON THE SAME LAYER where you won't have any flexibility about accurate positioning. A better idea is to Cmd-J your active selection; this will put a copy of the selected area on a new layer where you can do whatever you wish with it.

Gordon

ps Cmd key = Apple key

Thanks for that all works fine and it does look like I have more flexibility. The only problem is that the image is just a white oval on a chq background, i.e. it does not take the physical content just the outline.

Re: A really easy question
You're working on the background layer, Richard. Make sure the layer you want to operate on is selected!

Steve

I dont think I am explaining myself very well.

I now have 3 layers from top down

Layer 1 - wheel on chq background
Layer 2 - chq background with cut out of hub (but white filled)
Background - clean white background

From your video you easily move the centre of the wheel. I cant do that all I can do is move the outline.

Hope this makes more sense

Cheers

Richard

Re: A really easy question
If I follow this correctly you are doing step 6 on page 4 rather than step 7. In other words you have to hold down the apple key before you drag or else you will just get the selected region and not the selection.

Re: A really easy question
OK, I think I get it. In order to move the contents of a selection, you need to use the Move tool (shortcut V) or hold the Command key as a temporary measure. With one of the selection tools active, you will indeed just move the selection itself.

So by holding the apple key then this effectively deselects the selection tool, or I could just click on the move icon.

If this is the case then I am still getting the same thing. Should I reinstall CS3?

I have just flattened the image and then tried again and it works.

It wasnt me honest!!!!

Thanks for all your help and sorry to waste everyones time.

If anyone has any ideas as to why it has done what it has I would be interested in the answer.

Thanks

Re: A really easy question
richard

with any of the selections tools active pressing control/cmd gives you the move tool for as long as you hold it down.
CS3 has some amazingly complex keyboard shortcuts which take years to fully learn.
As a general rule the main 3 players are alt / shift or cmd along with a letter, character or number (depending on your preferences setup).

Are you sure the selection you actually trying to move is also the active layer (highlighted blue).
Its easily possible to have a selection highlighted but from a layer below or above the active layer, if this is the case then trying to move it will only result in the outline being moved rather than its contents...if that makes any sense.

start the process again, click on the layer you want to move and then cmd click on the layer icon (this will produce an active selction, or the marching ants) then with any selction tool active press and hold cmd while you drag it, or press and hold cmd + alt and keep them pressed while you drag to make a copy of the selection, if you also press shift at the same time this will keep movement to the horizontal/vertical or diagonal planes only.

hope this helps (im sure your copy of photoshop is fine), a few weeks ago i didnt even know what a selection tool was, so hang in there.

Re: A really easy question
This book is set up for the advanced user that is familiar with Photoshop. This is OK, as it gives great advanced methods without being 1000 pages long. But for us newbies it is sometimes easier to use the menu and select the tool to better learn what we are selecting and why. Once learned then go to the shortcuts. On windows machines the shortcut keystrokes are listed at the right of the tool drop down list.

Re: A really easy question
Cy

When i purchased CS3 i also purchased a very comprehensive 6 dvd CS3 training course (a bit like having my own personal photoshop tutor). And out of all the books i have i have found the dvd training far and away the most useful.
Bearing in mind i new less than nothing about photoshop only a few weeks back. Im now at the stage where i actually feel quite comfortable with it, and im learning alot of keyboard shortcuts already.
Personally i find physically watching someone do something in real life a much easier way of learning. In the dvd training i work along with the guy in my copy of CS3 and he talks me through what im doing and why.
Had i not purchased those i would have been much further behind.

Of course now im gradually getting to grips with photoshop i feel that im able to start to tackle steves book, which until now has remained on my shelf, but now i actually have a clue what hes talking about i can begin
