rust & grime movie from book
It looks like the whole technique is done in the channels pallet but near the end Steve says to make a layer mask to mask out some of the rusted areas. Is that done in the layers pallet or the channels pallet? If so, which layer or which channel. The pallet is not visible so I can't tell whether Steve is talking about the channels or layers pallet.

OK - all the rust is added using Channels, as you righty suggest. But this covers the entire face of the sign; I used a layer mask on this rust to hide parts of it so that the sign shows through beneath it.

Does this make sense?

I guess the confusing part is that I don't know enough about the channels pallet.

So you colorized the sign with a new layer above the rust layer and created the rust layer on another layer and then masked out some of the rust layer?

Did you colorize the alpha 1 layer?

Forgive me for being so stupid but it's hard to follow once I lose sight of the channels pallet.

Re: rust & grime movie from book
The Channels palette is used to create a new channel, and the artwork is built on that. Then you can forget about it - it's only used to create the alpha channel which you use in Lighting Effects, to create the rust on a new layer. It's this layer (not a channel) that you colorize.
