Arrow Keys
Hello, I just purchased the 4th edition and this is my first post. I am working through the exercises from the beginning and am enjoying it very much. My problem concerns the arrow keys and some others that do not work. The arrow keys will not move a selection (I have CS3 and previously had PS_7 with which the arrow keys did move the selection) and the [ key will not resize a tool. I have not been able to get an answer from Photoshop and am hoping someone here might know. Thanks. |

Re: Arrow Keys
Hi mik did you uninstall ps7 before installing CS3 ? also you may need to manually go into keyboard shortcuts (under preferences) and key them in. You can actually design your own keyboard shortcuts to suit your own needs, so if you find [] are not assigned then simply asign them to alter brush size, the same applies to any other keyboard shortcut. I have actually totally changed the default keys and loaded a custom set of keyboard shortcuts that suit me much better. |

Re: Arrow Keys
If you are selecting part of an image you can switch to the move tool to move the selection. If you are creating a selection on a new layer, ie a rectangular selection, you need to fill the selection first, then switch to the move tool and use the arrow keys from there. You can use free transform instead of the move tool as well with the arrow keys. |

Re: Arrow Keys
Thank you both for your comments, Progenic, I did uninstall PS 7 before installing CS2. I went to the keyboard shortcuts and could not find anything for the arrow keys but I did find the brush size. I tried typing the "]" key in there and it did not come up with the "]", it shows as a Y with a bar over it. I suspect this is related to my problem and somehow the keys are not mapped correctly in photoshop. I will try and use the keys as mapped and see what happens but if you have any other suggestions please let me know. Steve, no matter what I try to do with the arrow keys to move a selection, it will not work. I get no reaction from them; yet I can use them to move around in the menus and other places in PS. Also, I have updated the keyboard driver (ACER laptop with a standard 101/102 keyboard. Do either of you think it is worthwhile to re-install CS2 and if I do will that affect my ability to install it on another PC in the future? Thanks again for your help. |

Re: Arrow Keys
I just used the "[" to change the shortcut and it now works as it is supposed to, even though in the shortcut list it shows as Y with an umlaut. The "]" types in the menu as a U with a bar (or umlaut). Obviously, this is the root of the problem and I could go through and change all the unresponsive keys but that gets very confusing. Incidentaly, the Esc key does not work to end a crop either. But, most other keys do work as they are supposed to, all the letter keys seem to. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. |

Re: Arrow Keys
mik I had a similar problem once and it took me ages to realise what it was. I had my keyboard and language preferences setup as English(US) instead of English(UK) and it was doing some very strange things with my keyboard. Maybe that could be a problem ? |

Re: Arrow Keys
its not in PS, its in windows itself. goto control panel and then click on regonal language settings, and you may find a change there helps. |

Re: Arrow Keys
Thank you all for your help. Unfortunately, it seems as if there is a Photoshop defect, I found a thread on the Photoshop forum regarding this same issue: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.3bc40715/63 It appears that Adobe is saying that people who have CS2 disks that were manufactured in Singapore have pirated software, even though Adobe allowed the serial numbers to be used to register the product. They now seem to have wiped out all traces of the registration. I purchased my copy through Amazon and will try to get some satisfaction through them but it has been a while since I purchased it. I would really like to find a fix for the software and have a legitimately registered copy though. I have submitted a case to Adobe also. Thanks again for your help, when I get further information, I will update the thread. |

Re: Arrow Keys
Hello, just to update. Adobe has provided me with a new serial number for my copy of CS2. While this does not solve the specific problem it certainly makes me happier to have a registered version. I will contact their technical service now to get a fix for the problem (I hope). |

Re: Arrow Keys
Hello, Final update on this one. I have a registered version of CS2 but it does not allow me to get any technical service without paying for service. There is a charge of 39.95 (US) for each problem. Rather than spend the service charge, I decided to upgrade to CS3. I would rather have waited until the next version to upgrade but decided that it would be better to get a new version direct from Adobe for the upgrade price. The new version works fine, no problems with keys. |
