More Movie Problems
I have found numerous problems with some of the movies on the DVD supplied with my copy of the 4th Edition of the book. I have tried downloading the Missing Movies file mentioned on the website but I still have problems!
For example, the "Complex Shadows" movie relating to page 142 has no sound. Anyone else having the same issues? |

Re: More Movie Problems
The sound problem is due to a recent update to Quicktime which appears to have disagreed with the audio compression used for the movies. A solution is being worked on. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: More Movie Problems
Yes, this is a problem caused - apparently - by a licensing issue between Apple and Qualcomm, who make the PureVoice encoding I used to record the movies. Qualcomm support is no longer built into the latest version of QuickTime, which means the sound disappears. I'm talking to the publishers about the best way to resolve this, but until we get a solution the best workaround would be to use a standalone movie player such as the free vlc, which should play just about everything. Sorry about this - it's taken me (and many others) completely by surprise! |

Thanks for the quick responses! I will download vlc and give it a go. Incidentally Steve, the book is brilliant! I certainly will be looking out for your future book on Illustrator. |

Re: More Movie Problems
I just received my copy of 'How to Cheat in Photoshop CS3, 4th Ed'. I've had a chance to go through a couple pages already, and I'm really excited! At first, I seemed to have the same problem with the dvd as described above. I could open all files on the dvd I'd tried so far, including all video tutorials, but approximately half to two-thirds of the video files had no audio. (For instance, 3D Layers.mov would play fine, as did Turning_heads.mov and Window light.mov, but Making it rain.mov presented me with a video in which all proceedings would go on in an eery silence. Very spooky!) I'd been playing them on the standalone movie player vlc, as suggested above, but it was only when I downloaded the latest (free) version of QuickTime that all problems seem to have subsided, and I am enjoying the video tutorials tremendously. So I'm hoping this post will help anybody who encounters the same problems I did initially. There's one somewhat odd thing left though: The audio on the only videos that origionally worked for me under vlc (I haven't tried all of the others yet, who now, I'm assuming, all do work with sound), seem to present me with a copy of uncut master files... Whenever misspoken or up for a better choice of words, I'll hear you interupting yourself mid-sentence, mr.Caplin, and counting to 3 to mark the point where you'll start over the interupted sentence. For editting purposes for the final cut, I'm assuming. Could it be that on the fourth edition dvd unedited and different audio-codex versions of the video tutorials have mistakenly been included instead of edited versions..? Mind you, it is not in any way diminishing my appreciation for the tutorials. If anything, it adds a certain personal touch. Ubiq |

Re: More Movie Problems
This 1, 2, 3 thing is most embarrassing! When I record the movies, if I make a mistake I go back and count myself in to re-record that section from before the error. Then, I go through the finished movie and erase all the errors. On my Mac, this works fine. But it seems that erasing these portions doesn't truly remove them in some instances, and with some applications on the PC they still show up. I've been through all the movies and resaved them, and hopefully this will have removed all the edits. I suspect you may have bought an early printing of the book, which still contained all the dodgy movies. Thanks for your kind words about them - but I still wish I'd got it right first time around! I had a furious phone call from a reader about this last week, accusing me of being amateurish. He had a point, of course. But my speciality is Photoshop, not video encoding. Apologies! |
