Memory Card can not be used
This isn't a Photoshop question, but there seems to be a great deal of high level photographers on this forum and maybe someone has had this happen to them. Came back from Costa Rica with three 2 gig SD cards. Two of them work fine at retrieving pictures, but with the third one the Nikon D 40X camera says "Memory card can not be used. May be corrupted." The computer does not recognize that the USB card reader is present with that card plugged in. Tried Photo Rescue but again the card reader is not recognized - like nothing is plugged in. Any ideas on how to rescue 500 pictures on disk? Thanks. |

Cy, If you can't rescue the images with Photo Rescue, it seems that the card has somehow been corrupted. Before you give up, though, there are several other utilities out there that will attempt to recover data from photo cards. I suggest you download as many demos of them as you can, and you may find one that works. Best of luck with this. Must be heartbreaking. Steve |

Re: Memory Card can not be used
The major problem is that the computer does not even recognize that there is a card present. Therefore, the recovery program can not do its job. May have to look for a specialist that can take the card apart and retrieve the data. Sure don't want to loose them as too much time and money invested in trip. |

Re: Memory Card can not be used
Hi Cy, I have had this kind of problem occasionally with a CF card. These suggestions are long shots but I'm assuming you are using a PC. You could try looking for someone with a MAC and see if the MAC recognises it. In my case it was my MAC that wouldn't recognise the card so I popped it into my PC and it worked - I have absolutely no idea why!! Also try (borrow) another card reader. Alternatively try another PC that uses a different OS. I assume that you can see the pics on the camera's viewing screen. I don't know the Nikon D40 but can you hook it up directly to the PC and download from there? There is a piece of software that I have not tried :- http://www.cardrecovery.com/download.asp . It may help but it does say that you may need another card reader if the card doesn't appear in 'My Computer". If none of these suggestions works then it may mean a trip to your local, friendly data recovery people - expensive but you should get your pics back. The very very very final solution is the "Russian Roulette" one - but this game has five bullets and one empty chamber! Re-format the card and then try the data recovery software. But I emphasise that this is many months down the road when absolutely everything else has failed. If the data is in there then I'm sure that you'll get it out. That's the best I can come up with at the moment I'm afraid. Gordon |
