Quick Mask 2:transformation Creating lozenge
Why is the Quick Mask necessary in step 7? I kept trying it until I found that the Quick Mask was not needed, and in fact would not copy to the opposite side at all. True, I am only on page 12-13 but wonder if I am missing something here. Really love the book and its possibilities! |

Re: Quick Mask 2:transformation Creating lozenge
You need QuickMask to make the lozenge as a selection. Sure, you could simply draw a lozenge this way as a regular layer, but the purpose of the exercise here is to show how you can manipulate selections within QuickMask. Good question, though! Welcome to the forum Steve |

Re: Quick Mask 2:transformation Creating lozenge
At the end, I did everything except use QuickMask and it worked beautifully. I tried repeatedly to use the Quickmask as directed but found that it just didn't do it. I even had my wife follow your book and what I did in case I missed something but she agreed that the Quickmask was not necessary creating the lozenge. Now I am going to buy my wife her own copy of your book. Not easy to share one book having our own computers. Your book has to be the best I have ever seen to learn more about using CS3. What a breat concept to include Photoshop Files. |

Thanks for the kind words! Glad you're finding the book so useful. But I'm concerned that you couldn't get the lozenge effect to work in QuickMask. Can you specify where the problem arose? If it worked on a regular layer, the technique should work exactly the same in QuickMask - except that when you exit it, you'll be left with a selection rather than a filled layer. |

Re: Quick Mask 2:transformation Creating lozenge
I feel guilty taking your time with this but...using the rectangular Marquee tool creating a rectangle which I filled with color and then deleted the marching ants. I pressed Q and selected the Elliptical marquee tool to create a circle from top to bottom of the rectangle (using the shift key). Selected V and with alt and shift moved the circle to half way beyond the left edge of the rectangle. It remains a clear circle of marching ants and will slide to the right edge but not as a copy when using alt and shift. If I do not use the quickmask to create the circle, it does create a left lozenge and will copy to the right side of the rectangle exactly as depicted in your book which is why I questioned the use of the quickmask to accomplish it. Your problem is that you filled the rectangle and deleted the selection. After you draw the rectangle with the rectangular Marquee tool, press Q. You don't need to fill the selection with color and you certainly don't want to delete the selection. |

I've used this technique and it works fine. The beauty of QM is that you can make alterations while you're within it, i.e. the desk lamp image where the area around the light is to remain sharp while the light rays are feathered. QM is king in my view and is an invaluable tool. It gives you an excellent preview of what a feather will look like on a brush stroke or selection without actually applying the transformation. All I can suggest is that you use this feature as an integral part of your imaging and once mastered, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it. Nick |

Thank you, Bob. I was not aware not to color and delete but I see now how well your suggestion worked. I was reading it too literally. |

Stick with it, pixelens! And really, don't worry about "taking up our time" - we wouldn't bother if we didn't want to. That's the purpose of the forum, helping people out with their Photoshop problems whatever they might be. |
