Animation
If I have 30 jpeg files how can I turn that into an animation with CS3 regular version? Do I need to change them all to GIF as Cheat in PhotoShop book alludes to? |

Re: Animation
You'll have to explain further. Do you want to sequence the jpegs one after the other? The only way you can make animations INSIDE Photoshop is by saving them as GIF files. |

Re: Animation
With PhotoShop 7 one just clicked on Import Frames to Layers, selected a file with the jpg photos and it opened in Image Ready. I played 30 jpg files as an animation once in CS3, but can't figure out how I did it, or how I get back to it. When I try Import with CS3 it just says "No Items Match Your Search". I tried typing in *.jpg and it comes up with the file list but can open only one frame at a time. Tried holding Shift and Ctrl key to select files that that made no difference. What am I doing wrong? |

Re: Animation
Not sure if this is what you mean but can't you that with the Animation pallet under Window menu? |

Re: Animation
When I use that it will not open the files as layers, just one file. |

Re: Animation
Hello Cy, CS3 can handle animated gifs. It can also handle several other formats now, such as AVI, MPG, MOV and several more, in a limited fashion. The problem is, when Adobe combined Image Ready and Photoshop, they forgot to put the animated gif in the menus. Oops!
The work around for this is as follows: To open an animated gif, go to File > Import > Video Frames to Layers. In the File name input box, type in "*.gif" and press return. You will now see your gifs, and can import them just fine. Go to Window and open the animation pallet, and you will find that all of your frames are present, and will play fine. To Save an animated gif, use the "Save for web" dialog. Be sure to save your output file to a new name. When you save, photoshop may show an error, about not being able to work with multiple frames and delete all of your additional frames from your animation menu, but it will save fine. Just close the file and re-import to continue editing. Regards, Dave. |

Re: Animation
I have tried that technique many times, but it does not work. I click on Import video frames to layers, I get a list of 7 folders with a series of pictures in each folder. I then double click on a folder and it says no match found. I then type in *.jpg and a list of files appears. It will allow only one file to be selected even though I have tried using the shift and ctrl keys. When it opens in CS3 the single file is in window Titled "Import Video to Layers. There are 2 buttons for Range to Import, one for "From beginning to end" and the other for "Selected Range". I need this box on previous step, but the only option I see is to click OK. When I click OK it will only import the one frame selected earlier. What am I doing wrong? |

Re: Animation
Try entering '*.gif' Not '*.jpg' A gif can contain an animation. A jpg can't. Perhaps this will help: Import using "Import video frames to layers
Enter *.gif to see your list of gif files. Or enter the name of your gif and press return.
You will see the import video dialog. Click ok.
You will see the first frame displayed on your stage. Open the animation dialog from the windows menu to see all of your frames.

Re: Animation
Dave - Thanks for the clear illustrations, they are great. Converted one folder from jpg to gif, but still having same problem. I get to the folder "test movement" and it says "no items match your search" I type in *.gif, hit return and it shows the 5 gif files in it. It will only let me select one file so I click on 1st one and click load. The "import video to layers" box comes up as you show. Click OK and it loads the file I had previously selected. Open animation dialog and it still only shows that one file. I must be doing something wrong in selecting the folder as I can only open one of the files. In your example after you type *.gif and hit return do you get the "Import Video to Layers" box, or a list of files as I do? Have you already saved this in a special format, or just 15 or so of gif files? |

Re: Animation
I'm a little concerned about your comment that you are converting jpg to gif. a jpg does not support animation, and if you are converting that to a gif, then your gif will only have one frame. Also, you are aware that all the frames in an animated gif, reside within one file, right? In photoshop, the frames will be separated out into layers. In my example above, when you enter *.gif and press return, you will see a list of gif files in your folder as shown above. When you click load, to import the gif file, then you will see the import to layers dialog. But you can only import one gif at a time. If you are trying to create an animated gif out of several single frame gifs, then you would just open the single frames gifs, like any other image, and then drag it to a layer in the animated gif file that you are creating. Here is a little animated gif that you can experiment with. I know that this one works. It will open with 60 frames (as layers).
Download from Here I hope that this clears things up a bit. Dave |

Re: Animation
Perhaps they have changed the rules since PhotoShop 7. Back then I could make a series of jpg files save them and then import as frames. Was trying to do the same thing with CS3. Like I said before I ran the animation once before in CS3 but can't figure out how I did it now. Will play with your animation and see how you have it set up. Thanks so much for all the great help. |

Re: Animation
To All Just found another solution to animation in PhotoShop for Windows forum. Works with jpg files also. If you have a series of files that you want to animate do this - Pull down "File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack" - Then in the Animation palette menu, choose "Make Frames from Layers" And there you have it! |

Re: Animation
Ah, now I see what you were trying to do. Sorry for the confusion. Are you saving this as an animated gif? Yes that will work too. Although there are really other tools that are better for this kind of thing. I would probably use Flash, and I think that Afteraffects would work well too. |
