background layer
When I open an image file such as a jpg with a background only and then double click it in the layers pallet to form a new layer, the background layer disappears and I only see the new layer. Is this normal? I can swear I used to always see the background layer too. I even restored the default settings and made no difference. confused! |

Re: background layer
Yes, it's normal. At least, I've never known it to work any other way! Double clicking the background layer 'promotes' it to a normal layer. If you want to keep the background layer intact, drag it over the 'new layer' icon at the bottom of the layers pallete. You will then have a copy to work on. Maybe this was the confusion? |

Re: background layer
Thanks very much for clearing that up. Stupid me, I was thinking that double clicking the bg layer was the same as dragging it to the new layer icon, that it was just a shortcut. So does that mean there is no more background layer when it is double clicked? I always thought there always has to be a background with other layers going on top of it. |

Re: background layer
That's right, there's no more background layer once you've promoted it to a normal layer. If you erase part of it you'll just get the checker board. The advantage to promoting it is that you can move it up and down the layer stack if required. |
